hey guys,
I have been following the chat around here for a few months and I have noticed something that a lot of appointed candidates seem to have done - attend the Boys State program. I saw that it really helps give a valuable experience that people love, so in january i applied and just got word last week that I got accepted. (if you are wondering, its the boys state in ny) In short, is there anything I should take with me to the program in June besides what is listed on their website? If anyone attended the program or has a son or daughter attend it, i would gladly accept advice. :)

Take confidence with you. You're going to be doing a lot of campaigning for various leadership positions around the "state". Boys State is what you make it. There were some guys in my city who didn't speak a word the entire week.

Don't forget to have fun!

learn the key jobs available before going and actively pursue what you want, mayor is the ultimate guvjng you a chance for governor or ultimately boy’s nation senator

Totally immerse yourself in the program. Be active, and you will be amazed with the experience you will have. DS had an amazing time. He met some really awesome guys there who he still remains in contact with.
Have fun!

I have been affiliated with Palmetto Boys State in SC for 36 years. I’ve given around 1800 speeches, arguments, presentations, etc in my life. The first was at Boys State. I gave three more speeches that week, and each one got progressively. . . Worse. I lost every election. Wait. I was the alternate to the party platform committee. Still, for some strange reason, I thought the week was a huge success. That one week changed my life and inspired me like nothing else. The closing speech by then Director Ed Pendarvis was a catalyst for me becoming someone different. (I repaid Ed, unbeknownst to him, by helping his daughter 34 years later win a seat on the Court of Appeals.)

Throw yourself into it. Try it all. Soak it all in. Don’t do anything ahead of time. Being Governor of Boys State will mean nothing. Participating to the fullest will mean everything.

Finally, to quote the great Tucker Hipp’s, a PBS senior counselor who was tragically taken from us several years ago, “You can’t explain (Palmetto) Boys State. You can only experience it. Amen, Tucker! Amen!

I am a staffer at New Jersey Boy's State and will be there for the entire week. It is an altogether great time and the Service Academy reps at the college fair usually get a lot of interest from the statesmen.
