DS did Boys State this past summer. DS is not applying to any service academies, mainly because he does not have strong enough academics and has no interest in STEM. However, DS plans to do NROTC or NROTC-MO either on scholarship or as a college programmer. And, he has a strong desire to serve his country. Whether Boys State helped him on his NROTC-MO scholarship application, we may never know. And that doesn't matter. The import thing is that I think Boys State may have shown DS another way to serve his country in addition to, and after, his military service.

After several months of reflection, and hearing how DS thinks now, I think Boys State is the best thing DS has ever done in his life. DS was a very happy go lucky, social type and not very academically oriented or too serious about anything prior to Boys State. But since Boys State, he has been talking for the first time about a future in government. Not right away, but after his five years of AD. He is also thinking about graduate school - - maybe law school - - in his future, way down the road. I could not be more pleased about his interest in government (not so crazy about law school. LOL.) Heaven only knows that our country needs better people in government (but not necessarily more lawyers.) I don't know whether DS would have really understood how our government works without the hands-on experience of Boys State. I think Boys State has really kindled a spark inside of him. I take my hat off to the American Legion for running this amazing program.

While on AD, your DS might want to keep an eye on USMC Congressional Fellowship Program and/or also on Navy Postgraduate School to perhaps satisfy that graduate school itch.
