hi I was just chosen as the alternate for boys state and my chances are slim, so I was wondering if there were any ways I can find a way to go?

Contact your American Legion post. You may be able to pay your own way if feasible.

You can contact other American Legions in the area to see if they have spots left

Agreed, request to meet with your legion. While not essential to acceptance, it gives you and them a bit of insight. Strongly encouraged.

Our legion selected one boy to go from each HS in our district and the rest were “qualified” and approved to go but had to pay their own way. I think we had 20+ attend from our school district (7 HSs) but the majority of them paid for it out of pocket.

It has been our experience (and it may vary by area) that alternates that want to go do usually get a spot. Be sure they know you are willing to go and be sure to fill out the paperwork because there will be someone who was chosen that will not go (may happen soon or could be right down to the wire). Both of my children have done it (one was picked and one was an alternate). Best of luck!

I think they also have slots for journalist in some states. You attend but you are reporting on the activities instead of being a delegate. Something to ask when you contact the legion.

My local American Legion post helped sponsor me. I didn't apply through my school.

I am a trustee for my State's Boy's State and am the chairman for the 21 Legion posts in my county. Here, if you are an alternate, it is because the post already has its slots filled and you are on a waiting list. In this county, if a boy cancels, the post pushes one of their alternates into the slot as you would expect but if all of their alternates are "used" then they turn their open slot to me and I roll alternates from elsewhere in the county. Here in NJ, alternates who are still alternates when Boy's State starts (Father's Day) are encouraged to show up ready to go and they are moved in to fill vacancies that invariably happen. For the last 10 yrs or so, everyone who showed up as an alternate ended up staying for the week.
