Boys State or NA Summer Seminar?

Unfortunately my weeks overlap. Which one do you think would give me a better experience and would look better on an application for any college (including USNA, and USAFA)?

Boys State is worth something on your application. That is, it adds some points to the whole person score. Attending any of the summer seminars is not reflected in any way on your application or while person score.

That being said, what do you want to achieve for your summer? Do you want to add something to your resume (Boys State?). Or do you want to get a better feel for what the academy might be like? (Don't forget you can accomplish that to a degree by visiting the Academy).

Will your summer schedule allow you to do both if you ask USNA to switch your assigned week to one of the other weeks? If not, Kinnem's post above is sage advice.

Our BGO told us the opposite and strongly suggested out DS attend NASS instead of Boys State. We have great respect for him and he has been a wonderful support through this process. Why don't you have your BGO review your resume and let him/her offer you advice.

remember NASS gets $ for USNA... Boy’s State is usually free...

That's quite cynical. Our BGO has given us no reason to believe he has anything but the best interest of our son in mind. He has been an incredible help and I am certain his advice had nothing to do with the minimal fee that will be collected from us for NASS.

Boys State is the better choice if you are sure you want to attend USNA

at what point do you get assigned a B&G officer?

How do you know that comment was aimed at you? It might simply be a pro/con thing, which is how I took it.

You have a BGO in your area.. ask your school counselor.

Boys State was actually the reason my DS decided to attend an SA. I do not know how many pts it was worth on his applicion but it was life direction changing for my DS. He was offered appt. to USNA and WP and will “happily” be reporting to the USNA this summer. He did not attend NASS but was convinced during CVW.

So your son was offered appointments to USMA & USNA & didn't attend any SS's?
Good to hear & hope his experience becomes known to all who applied to SS's, didn't get accepted, & were bummed out about it.
Congratulations & good luck.

Our kid attend NASS, Boys State and a S.A.M.E Camp. Luckily, they were each a different week in June. Unfortunately, he didn't receive appointment but I know that during interviews (both with BGO, Navy and Army reps) they all asked questions about these opportunities. He was awarded both Army and Navy scholarships so I feel that there wasn't anything really "lost" or not gained.

Yes. Although he always had an interest in the military, it was not until he attended Boys State that he decided this was the path he was called to follow. It was obviously too late at that point to attend either SA’s SS and he had to really catch up with the process as he could not even do 1 pull-up in June. He had applied to and was not accepted to the USNA summer stem in middle school. I think the lesson for all is that there is no “one” way to an offer of appointment to an SA.

I would safely say NASS doesn’t bare any weight on an application. Of the 6 people in my squad last year I was the only fortunate one to receive an appointment this year. And I know many people who didn’t go an receive a direct appointment.
