Boys State or SS or Senate Page?

Fencermother, pima, and some others make a very important point. A lot depends on the nominations you are trying to get. As I mentioned previously, there are some areas where it's pretty easy to get a nomination. Some places are easier than others to receive an appointment. But there are some areas that are more "Cut Throat". I don't want to say competitive, because many on this forum use that word to describe their school. I.e. "I am at a very "Competitive" school.... bla bla bla. We all know that's irrelevant. Even the academy realizes it's pretty irrelevant. Plus; most kids don't have a choice at where they go to school. BUT I DIGRESS. "CUT THROAT". Meaning, instead of 20-30-40 people putting in for a NOMINATION from a MOC, they could be in a district, or even state, where there are 100-200-500 people putting in for a NOMINATION. This SUCKS when only 10 people from that district can receive a nomination.

So the best thing to do, is to find out the facts. You can actually find most of the stats you need. In many states for instance, the American Legion runs Boy's State. (Some other organizations do in some states). You can contact those who run boy's state, and find out how many people in your district actually attend. You can find out from the various schools. You can also contact your MOC's office, (Or better yet, have a 3rd party like a teacher or school counselor you're close to), and have them ask the MOC's office: "About what is the percentage of those applying for a nomination from your office have attended Boy's State?". Obviously, if most of those receiving appointments went to boy's state, that might tell you something. On the other hand, if you find out that only 1-2 on the slate did, then maybe your MOC doesn't put as much weight on it.

Obviously, the BEST scenario, is if you could do BOTH boy's state and senate page position. This may or may not be possible. I think we all agree that summer seminar isn't important for the appointment. However, you definitely should APPLY for summer seminar. This way, whether you get accepted or not; or do and decide to turn it down for boy's state, senate page, etc. at least you can put that on your MOC APPLICATION for a nomination, and show how committed you are.

Best of luck.
