Some general advice for parents of future boys state and girls state delegates. There are several scholarships available for delegates. My son is starting Boys State today. I just learned that one of the scholarships (the Samsung) that we may have been interested in must be submitted by the first day of Boys State. The application opened in February but I only learned about it today. Too late! My fault.

Nice reminder!
Just to clarify for those lurking, these scholarships are for college, not to help offset the cost of attending Boys State.

I am just finished with day 2 of our Boys State and it is going well so far in a very challenging environment. The Northeast has been slow to recover and our program is taking a pretty conservative approach including masking indoors, etc and our host institution has lots of safeguards in place in the dining hall, etc. Nonetheless, we had a fairly large number of late cancellations and no-shows along with a goodly number of sponsoring posts that either can't fund this year or aren't even open yet due to COVID so our numbers are probably about 30 or so percent down. I haven't heard a final number yet but I think we're at around 600 which is still one of the largest state programs and almost all of our normal sessions and seminars are happening. We lost our College Fair which is usually late on Tuesday morning but are still having our Service Academy/ROTC seminar tomorrow and it is usually very well attended.

The staff is pretty exhausted right now but Its great to help the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow.

The American Legion sponsored our son and his experience at our Boys State made such an impact. The counselors became mentors and friends to this day. He went on to Boys Nation where he made even more connections. I applaud you and your team for continuing through this challenge. The leaders of tomorrow need this and may find their voice and self in this process. Thank you.

Sadly last year they didn't offer it since most were cancelled. My DS applied for it in '17 (did not get it) but my DD didn't get the chance last summer. And my dad was a Korean veteran (extra points).

My DD applied for it. Her grandfather was a Korean vet. She spent hours on the application and we thought she had a very good chance. Nope! It’s is extremely competitive but it was a great experience since this won’t be the last time she goes through this process!

@Mere2033 Sometimes it's possible to attend on your own dime without the scholarship. You might want to contact your local American Legion post.

No, we are talking about college scholarships that can be applied for by delegates, not the cost of attending Boy’s State which is 100% paid for by the American Legion.
