I know that Boys State teaches about state and local government. My son was invited to a Model Congress in DC this summer where he might get to meet his Congressman and Senators. The students work in congressional committees and address national issues. Same dates as Boys State. Is Boys State a "must" for service academy applications? Or could Model Congress be a good substitute? Thanks!

This is just what I've heard about Boys State as compared to other summer programs, that it's typically more recommended over equivalents as it'll be more points on the WCS. However, not 100% sure that it definitely will be in this scenario. My guess is Boys State would be better, but I'd definitely contact your admissions officer and/or regional commander to get the best answer

I went to boys state this past summer and it was one of the best experiences of my life. It did provide me an opportunity to personally meet my governor and my congressmen. I may be biased but I would definitely choose Boys State over Model Congress

The SA have formally recognized a few organizations that promote leadership within their programs, Boy Scouts/Girls Scouts of America and earning Eagle/Gold Star awards. Also, Boy State is recognized as a leadership program that instill good moral values. These programs do accumulate advantages of "Leadership Potential" as well as varsity captain that can fulfill the requirements SA seek. Thus, it is reflected on your WCS. It is important to understand you need to be involved. If you look atWP class composition goals, these two stats are listed.

Boys State is a guaranteed number of WCS points.

Model Congress may or may not lead to WCS points, depending on how it is categorized. I don't believe there is a checkbox for this activity on the application except for a category called "Other Activities". As such, any possible points are not specifically known or guaranteed.
