What is boys state. Ive never heard of it and is it to late to try and participate?

I assume that you are a Junior this year.

Boys State is a week long event lead by the American Legion. Basically, a bunch of high schoolers who just finished their junior year spend a week learning about State government structure from the city up, as well as leadership in general. There's more to it than that, but that's the basics.

It is usually in mid June (at least for MN). If you want to attend, contact your area Legion (they must sponsor you), or your school to find out more. I am home schooled, so I just met with a Legion Post where I live and they agreed to sponsor me. However, some friends of mine from a nearby school were approached by their school on behalf of the Legion because of their academics. It will depend, but showing an interest in the program may be all it takes. If you can, give it a try. Some people love it, every one learns a lot.:thumb:

Check with your school guidance office. DS's school picks 2 juniors each year to attend Boys State, and submits thier names to the American Legion. Son went last summer and really enjoyed it. He was then picked to return as a councelor (which he had to decline because of Navy appointment) but that was still a huge honor for him!

While not essential, it's one of those traditionally positive EC indicators for SAs, including USNA. Like many programs and activities of this patriotic, civic ilk, its lustre is a little faded. It's run by the American Legion, and of course, too many of those great associations are in need of young energetic blood.

Now, if one becomes one of your state's 2 U.S. Senators sent later in the summer to Boys Nation? That's a bit more notable. Remember seeing Pres. Clinton's pic shaking JFK's hand? Boys Nation.

And in all likelihood, these young nominees could do a heckuva lot bettern the turkeys gobbling on capitol hill these days. Saddest thing we've ever been forced to watch ...how power totally corrodes and corrupts.

And that sorta brings it back to the purpose of Boys State and Boys Nation. Similar but in multiples ...like the Marines, Congress needs a few good men and women.

Boys State

I disagree with Whistle Pig. If you have a chance to go to boys state do it. Some say it is almost equal to being an eagle scout. And it shows leadershp.

I am an eagle scout. Thanks for the info. Ill look into it. What are the deadlines

jake,

I strongly agree with rkrosnar......go if at all possible...it's a solid star on anyone's HS resume' according to my HS counselor spouse....DS was invited to attend Boy's State but NASS conflicted with the dates....he opted for NASS instead.

Where can i find the information needed to apply. I cant seem to find it. How do i join or become a member

Best bet is to contact your local American Legion group and/or your HS.

Check with your guidance counselor at school or the local American Legion Post, where you live or in your state American Legion Department of name of your state (ie; here in Pennsylvania it goes by American Legion Department of Pennsylvania). They will give you all information, you need. My son attended back in 2007 and the local post gave him 100 dollars spending money. As I said earlier, you should attend if you can. Boys State at least in Pennsylvania gives at least a twenty thousand scholarship, during the Boys State week. Someone in your family had to serve, if I remember to a military conflict, like a dad, grandfather, brother, whom ever. We found out about after it was too late. Make sure you check it out completely.

If can't find the info, just post a message with what state your from. And I try and send the link or links to you.

SOmeone in your family has to hve served in the armed forces? Would a grandfather in the reserves count and two great grandparents during world war 2 count? DO you know any deadlines. Thanks

How about you just contact your local american legion post. I'm sure they can be a lot more help to you! http://www.legion.org/posts

I didn't know you had to have a family member serve in the armed forces...

The Armed Forces requirement is just for the 20k scholarship, not for Boys'/Girls' State in general.

I just got notified of my nominaiton today and am hoping to get in and i am going to try to get into boys nation
