Hello all, I am preparing for my interview with my American Legion representative soon. I am aware that (for my state (TX) at least) the application is not to be completed until after the interview process, but is there anything I should do before the interview / is there anything I need to bring to the interview? Thanks!

Treat it like a congressional nomination interview. Dress conservative. Bring a resume. Be prepared to explain why you wnat to attend Boys State. Know about your achievements and how you attained them.
Be prepared to discuss patriotism, and how you feel about your country. Don't be stiff. Practice with your parents or a mentor. Most of all, BREATHE! Think before you answer a question.

The more interviews you participate in, the better and more relaxed you will become.

There are lots of threads on interview techniques.
Here is a good link on MOC interviews (It is a USNA website but the principles are the same).

Make sure you know what Boys' State is.

Get a nice haircut, have a firm handshake, look the interviewer in the eye, don't pepper your discussion with "like" or "super" or other annoying filler words. I mean, like, you know what I'm sayin'? Be super awesome! :bleh2::wink:

Really appreciate the advice. The interview went quite well, and I should be hearing back from them very soon. From what I was told, I'm almost certain I'll be going to Boys State! Thanks again!

I had my interview today in my school library and they gave me the blue card and the delegation packet right there and then!

I wore a blue plaid dress shirt and khaki pants. Firm handshake and eye contact is important like what the others has said. But I didn't have my resume with me and they didn't really ask about my grades or anything like that. The most they asked about my school life was the clubs that I was in.

Here's some questions they asked me:

1) Why do you want to come to Boys State.
2) Are you sure that you are willing to put your 100% effort into this program and will be dedicated.
3) What clubs are you in.
4) What do you want to do in the future

It took about 20 minutes but it went really fast. They were really nice and told their experiences at Boys State and what to expect at Boys State.

Good luck! :D

Oh wait whoops I just read your comment saying that you had it today.

I'm glad that you did well! Hopefully both of us can make it to Boys Nation and meet each other!

Congratulations! It sounds like you did a great job and impressed them. Enjoy Boys' State and take advantage of all of the opportunities. My kids enjoyed it so much and made lots of great friends. One of my sons used to run into Boys' State friends frequently at the big university he attended.

I interviewed in front of a panel of 5 veterans (was not expecting that!) part of the Legion post. They did not ask me anything about Boys State. They just wanted to get to know me better to see if I was the right fit and to see how interested I was.

They mostly asked about my application packet (resume and essay) just asking about my community service, job, soccer, our city government etc...

I was chosen to go the next day...I think they liked that I was just being myself, and I showed them that I really wanted this. They definetly know when you are BS'ing them and when you're actually answering from the heart.

Lastly I gave each panel member a firm handshake thanking them for taking their time out of their day to interview me.
