Branch Night Results?

Yes, I was just wondering why is it so popular.

It requires a large number of officers. There is 1 FA officer in every maneuver company in the army. And then there is 1 or 2 on every maneuver battalion staff. And then they fill the artillery battalions. Just a lot of positions for FA officers so it requires a lot of folks.

And for combat arms branch options artillery crews are usually miles behind the front lines . . .

But they do call it the Queen of battle for good reason.

If only that was actually true....

I’m a Field Artillery officer that has been out of BOLC for about 3 years. I’ve spent more time in an infantry battalion than an artillery one. When I deployed with them I must have missed the stop miles behind them I was supposed to get off at.

And FA is most definitely King of Battle, infantry is the Queen. Which when you think about it is fairly tame, the Russians refer to their artillery as “God of War.”

There seems to be a disproportionately large percentage of women in AG, and a disproportionately low percentage of women in Infantry. To the extent that men and women are at least officially equally qualified to serve in both capacities, I would have thought that the numbers which might suggest the contrary would be less conspicuous. Comments or theories?

I am thinking choice.
Probably. Only thing though is that I thought that AG was a branch which was very popular, and selective. I would think that a lot of men would also choose that, and that it would at least be closer to 50 50. I am also surprised that there are so few women who are interested in infantry, is it is a very popular Branch overall.

Infantry (and Armor) opened up for women for branch selection for the first time last year. The class of 2016 had three or four women petition to change their branch to infantry after the change was announced, and last year seven women were selected. Being the first is going to be tough going. Kudos to all who have chosen to take on the challenge. The chart below is for the class of 2017. Screen Shot 2017-11-19 at 9.56.15 AM.png

Thinking you would have to be a lawyer to go to AG (as per A Few Good Men).

JAG is lawyers - "so this is what the inside of a courtroom looks like!"

AG is admin and personnel - think Human Resources for a civilian equivalent.

Easily confused, Judge Advocate General (JAG) vs Adjutant General (AG)

I'm not sure about the blue. ..not seeing that on the chart. ..

Blue is who was selected for that branch without Branch Additional Service Obligation (BRADSO), i.e. with only the minumum commitment. So, look at Engineers (EN). The first to pick EN was the 9th ranked cadet. The 551st ranked cadet was the last cadet to be selected for EN without BRADSO. In the parlance of USMA, EN "went out" at 551 without BRADSO. Compare that to Medical Service (MS) which went out at 212, Aviation (AV) which went out at 234, and Military Intelligence (MI) which went out at 242, without BRADSO. No cadet needed BRADSO to "get" either Field Artillery (FA) or Chemical (CM).

Basically, you have to be ranked high in your class to obtain MS/AV/MI. FA/CM/TC not so much.

Any of the cadets with ranks (Order of Merit List - OML) in the red received their branch with an additional service obligation.

***That's last year's chart BTW. The 2018 chart was posted earlier in the thread.

Thank you!

Does anyone have data on where the cadets landed after adjusting for "detailed to..."?
