Branches

Is the "branch detail Infantry" a growing trend and, if so, why?

No, it is not new. Some branches require bunches of new lieutenants - infantry, armor, MP...

Some branches require fewer lieutenants, and more field grade leaders - MI, AG, Finance...

This is how the Army manages these pyramids.

I hope those detailed - soak up the opportunity to lead platoons of America's finest before trading it in for leadership opportunities that can be described as a bit more technical.

DS is GRFD. He got FA and knows his future detachment/assignment. He called yesterday to tell me his BOLC dates. He sounded very excited!

No - He graduates/commissions in May. Things are done slightly differently for National Guard. Once they receive their LOA for their assigned Guard unit I believe they can put in for their BOLC training - but don't quote me. I don't always get the full story :)

Did the cadets also find out if they got active duty or reserve duty at the same time? Or just find out their branches?

Congrats to him. Feel free to PM if he has questions on BOLC or the branch in general.

At Clarkson we made our first Cyber officer, and we had a young lady get branched Armor. Was a pretty good year for our senior class.

Cool, we got our first Cyber officer as well. So far, none of our ladies have wanted Combat Arms.

DS is currently in FA BOLC set to graduate in January. Holler with any questions as well. I’m sure the answers will not be as comprehensive as Bulls but I will do my best. Tell tour DS to be prepared to .....
Spend a few hundred dollars on school supplies.
Buy the bus drivers hat as it is necessary to graduate the school.
250 mile restriction for driving, over that distance requires taking leave.
Be in shape, they like to PT some .
Join the holiday inn points program as they will be staying in a HI express the entire time. And most of all...
Be prepared to study his butt off. DS and his buddy from college both said this course is very study intensive and is considered the most difficult BOLC after aviation. I do believe they are changing some things so they will no longer study formulas from WWI , not joking. Best of luck.

Sorry to interject about a branch I know nothing about....but, I remember a parent/teacher meeting at the beginning of the school year.

Both DS's had the same HS calculus teacher. He was a farm boy who ended up, 30 years later, as a HS calculus teacher. His advice was, "If you want to learn math, you do math." IOW, there is no such thing as studying for the exam.

I don’t know, DS might have better data. It’s been 3 years now and I know the course changed after I left. However, I guess the fundamentals are the same. Tell him to keep all of his gunnery stuff. He’ll continue to take safety exams when he gets to his follow on unit. I’m sure by this time he’s either taken his big BOLC safety exam or he’ll take it real soon, so he’ll know what I’m talking about.

Makes sense. In the FA BOLC world, “studying” for us usually meant practice excercises or running through gunnery problems. There are portions that require normal studying of various references and publications.

Passing all these messages along to DS - thinking he should just join the forum - LOL! Reading all the above I'm definitely thinking all his maths from his EE major might come in handy in his FA Branch! He's very excited and ready for the challenge. I'm loving all the information from these boards and I'm glad he found out his dates so quickly. I can't believe how fast this time went!
