Branches?

Here is something to give you a general idea:
As an example, DW as a Lieutenant was a parachute rigger and also was a water purification platoon leader.
But also understand that as an officer you can always find yourself in jobs that have nothing to do with your specialty. DW was a basic training XO (executive officer). As a pilot I found myself assigned as an UNMO (UN Military Observer) planning and leading ground patrols to enforce a cease fire. Not something anyone told me about in all my officer training.

DS branched QM. Once you graduate you go to Ft. Lee VA for Logistics BOLC (LOGBOLC). LOGBOLC covers Quartermaster, Transportation and Ordinance branches. You go through LOGBLOC with your branch specific peers, but you will learn aspects of all 3 branches.

It is likely early in your career, regardless which of 3 the branches you slot for, that you will wear the hats of any one or more of these logistics based branches. The unit you go to will likely determine which hats those would be. for example, if you are QM going to an Aviation unit, you probably wont have much cause for a transportation role. There are tons of unknowns until you get to your actual unit after LOGBOLC.

That said, when you get ready for Captain, you will attend "Logistics Captains Career Course" where it really becomes about Army logistics and sustainment.

My son LOVES it, great people, interact with all levels of command. Best of luck.

It will be very interesting to see changes in Branching over the next several years.

Will Combat Arms, in particular Infantry, be as attractive as it was when the US military was heavily engaged in Syraqistan? At least compared to Branches requiring skills more aligned with the civilian economy?

Will interest in USMA decline relative to other SA's?

Mission of the Army is to be prepared for combat. Slots for cyber and MI etc may increase a bit but combat arms will remain the core focus of branch allocations. Recently all branches have had to take a stint in combat arms after commissioning as well - this will not diminish.

My questions had less to do with the needs of the military and more to do with the aspirations of the future O-1's.

Would the likelihood of future deployments enter into their calculus?
