I have been looking and looking and maybe I am just looking in the wrong spots, but does anyone have an idea of the breakdown of numbers in what different categories appointments come form?

I realize that there are probably something like nearly 600 appointments reserved for MOC's, Superintendents, VP, Pres, Etc.
I also have read that the top 150 from the "slates" of MOC's must be appointed.

No where have I seen the actual breakdown as to actual appointments, ie:
Principal MOC or Other
Competitive slate
Presidential
Vice Presidential
JROTC/ROTC
AD/retired Military
Service Connected Disabled
Medal or Honor

And if there is minimum or maximum of the different appointment types allowed to be on campus at any given time? Is there no info out there because the SA's do not publish it? Thank You

You are combining Apples, Oranges and snowtires here.

First of all, I believe that you will NEVER see a count of Principal vs competitive slate, etc. In the end, they are all just MOC Noms.
AD/Retired Military are the Presidential Nominations and they are limited to 100. I'm pretty confident that they fill all 100 of them
in recent years and in the forseeable future. VP gets one or two slots per year for which they will have 10 or 20 nominations. I've heard
that most if not all of the 10/20 do get in.

There are more than the 600 that you mention. 538 MOCs plus Senators plus the DC reps plus another couple for Guam and Puerto Rico and the VP so 541
and all have an average of 1.25 per year so 676 pr so there plus a hundred for Presidentials - that makes 776. Add to that the ROTCs, Active Duty and Reserve
which are Secretary of the Navy Noms. The Service Disabled and MOH noms are a small number of appointments.

@oldRetSWO, Thanks for the answer. I sort of guessed that it was not the type of question that had a concrete answer. Thanks!

Actually this is listed in the US code and pretty straight forward to how a class is charged

Nominations:
6750 MOC
Presidential and Service Connected are unlimited

Appointments:
675 MOC & VP (see above for where that number comes from)
100 Presidential
100 Service Connected
150 of the NWL based on OML
100-200 Additional Appointees from NWL not based on OML

This gives you about 1200 appointments.

I understand that the 100 Service Connected slots are rarely filled which is a shame.

@USMA 1994, Wow...Thank You, this was what I was curious about. I had checked the threads here on the upcoming academy classes and only saw one Service Connected appointment in the big three (of course these threads were self entered and not all inclusive). Saw no Medal Of Honor, and only three AD/Active Reserve appointments. I was curious why no more. So Thanks, it is nice info to know.

Did you find this in 10 USC?

It is all there in different places but we get a condensed version as FFRs that summarizes it nicely.

The MOH category is rarely used as we do not have many individuals awarded the MOH that are still alive. I would guess that number is around 5 individuals since Vietnam??????

I would also guess that the Active Duty/Reserves applicants are a little older and their parents are not stalking these types of forums. ROTC nominations are also included in this group so those will show up on the list. No way to know how a candidate is charged until after the class is complete.

The service connected slots are not always filled as it is hard to find 100 qualified applicants. Some are sent to prep-school and will get in later. Not having these filled does not mean that someone is not admitted. It will just allow more slots for the last group called Additional Appointees. The class is filled until it reaches the number that is allowed not when just the primary nomination slates are resolved.

@USMA 1994, Thank you again. Your thoughts are appreciated. I guess "stalking parents" are very common. As we sit here, trying and trying to let our children do everything themselves it is difficult, so I try and gather as much information from people such as your self, so if one of my sons come and asks questions as least I am somewhat informed and discuss things with them and not give them bad info.

Presidential and Service Connected are two different categories.

Presidential is for children whose parents have served a long period of time or retired
Service Connect is for Active Duty/Reserve/National Guard/ROTC

Don't know about noms. A max of 20 are admitted from ROTC and JROTC programs (combined)hhh

@benlew1s, Direct from USNA's Admissions page: https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Apply/Nomination-Sources.php

Short form....each NJROTC Unit may Nominate three, if your unit is an "Honor Unit" it gets an additional three. Multiply this times maybe 100 NJROTC Units and you get 300-600 Nominations. you have to also add in the NROTC College students Nominated from their Cadre. The problem comes not with the Nomination, but with the Appointment. NROTC and NJROTC appointments are supposedly limited to 20 a year in total, so only 20 of the maybe 1000 get NJROTC/NROTC Appointments.

For additional info see 2015"s thread JROTC Nomination, it has a lot of good info. You can also search the forums for NJROTC, NJROTC Nominations, and NJROTC Appointments here and see what there is...:)

Here is the actual legal distribution of appointments at USMA: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/7442

These numbers are for the entire 4 yr enrollment cycle, not just annually.
Other than Presidential and ROTC, I see how the other service connected slots could go unfilled annually. One of my DS's back-up plans was to enlist then reapply as we'd heard many of the enlisted slots go unused.

What category do Preppies fall in when/if they get Appointments?
Depends on where their nomination comes from. The are required to apply for all available nominations so they can be charged anywhere. There is no special preppie category.
