I actually put bubble wrap in my kid's Christmas stocking.
Here's the back story (and you know, there's *always* a back story). My kid played hockey up until he left West Point. During Beast, he was injured and required surgery. And then another surgery. So he was sent home on a year long medical leave of absence to heal, do his PT and then get fit enough to pass the APFT. Of course the minute he was feeling better, he wanted to ski and rock climb, etc. The bubble wrap in his stocking was in jest - but only kinda. It was a hard year for him being home and being a cadet but not really a cadet. It's not an experience I'd recommend avoiding if possible.
