Bummed out

scores in

my son got his act scores for sept 2011 act
we are pretty bummed out too:
English 34
math 33
reading 25
science 26

that's not going to get him in. he is really upset. He is only a jr but this may keep him from even getting into the summer leadership.

Vista123, since West Point superscores, it can only help your son to take the ACT again. Or, try the SAT----my oldest son is the English/liberal arts type and did great on the SAT. My cadet is math/science-oriented and did much better on the ACT. Both of my kids improved every time they retook the tests. If finances permit, try a prep course and retake. My niece is doing the ACT prep class offered by Huntington and finds it very helpful. The verbal part is what is tripping her up.

SLS is very popular but it's not necessary to get into West Point. My cadet didn't even consider it because of the amount of school days he would have had to miss during a very busy junior year. He thought it was more important to have top grades and do well on his exams.

JMHO......

Take both the ACT and SAT as many times as possible. I have friends (other cadets) that took it up to 5 or six times. You do not have to take them all before December-you can take them up until they accept or decline you from the Academy. Remember to also get the rest of your application up to standard. Test scores do factor in but they do not represent the entire application when the board views it.

So I got my ACT score today.
Math- 27
English- 26
Reading- 25
Science- 23
A 25 composite. Not worthy of acceptance, but not fret. I plan on studying to increase my score for the next test.

Vista123- those are not bad scores at all!! The Math and English are above the average for sure and yes the reading and science are on the lower end but the composite score is still a 30. That is very acceptable! Especially considering USMA superscores!! Your DS can focus on really improving the reading and science scores and he is only a junior! I think you are overreacting! There is plenty of time for him to retake the test and even with those scores he is not out of the range! And ACT/SAT scores are only 1 part of the total picture!

For those wanting to improve ACT/SAT scores, here is a FREE on-line test prep resource. It is sponsored by the Army but with no strings attached.
Highly recommended by West Point admissions :thumb:
