Over the years, every so often, burger discussions crop up - In 'n' Out vs. Five Guys, etc. Passions ignite. Factions form. Trash talk is bandied about. Photos are posted.

I have been in Fort Worth the last ten days for meetings and training at the HQ for my new job (yes, finally back in the salaried work force as of 8 weeks ago).

So, for no particular reason, I ate sensible and healthy breakfasts, lunched on lightly dressed salads heavy on greens and cruciferous vegetables, faithfully did cardio and lifted...and indulged in a survey of In-n-Out Burger, Five Guys, Smashburger, Whataburger. I threw in a Texas Roadhouse burger for good measure. I have never seen such a meeting place of West Coast and East Coast chains.

Clearly, this was not a blind tasting. I did just get the basic cheeseburger at all test sites, with the smallest order of fries, and water. Alas, shake-testing must await another visit.

Stipulated: all of our backyard burgers are the best.

There are many other places good burgers can be found.

I still like the super-simple menu at In-n-Out, the well-made fresh patty, toasted bun, fries cut on the spot and fried before your eyes.

Five Guys - another good-tasting burger, but it always seems slightly greasier. An astonishing number of fries, as always, and more small dark crunchy ones, my favorites.

Smashburger. I like the smashing which seems to produce more surface area of crust, which I like. Otherwise, okay.

Whataburger. Um, okay. I didn't grow up with it, so no attachments there.

Texas Roadhouse. A very fine quality burger, beautifully cooked to my requested temp. Not quite within the study guidelines but hey.

I could not face Sonic or any other burger this trip. Time for beef detox.

Full confession: I also hit my old favorites of Old South Pancake House (Dutch baby!) and Hoffbrau House near TCU, and Cousins' BBQ for smoked turkey.

This about as off-topic as it gets, and is definitely not political, though I am sure someone will feel I have dissed Whataburger.

As a DFW native I second this motion and vote none of the above. The best hamburgers in Texas are not found at any national chain. They are found at hole-in-the-wall places with hand painted signs of the owner's name who has lots of hands-on experience at the grill. Another interesting survey in Fort Worth would involve Mexican food, the most well-known local favorite being Joe T. Garcia's, but with lots of excellent family-owned competition.
 
Holes-in-the-wall are a complete category on their own! I confess to always checking for the Diners, DriveIns and Dives locations anywhere I go.
 
Should you find yourself feeling the pangs of hunger in the balmy environs of Ft. Benning, head to the Four Winds Restaurant in nearby Cusseta for a Ranger Burger.

Couldn't agree more...Tommy's right outside the gate of NAS Fort Worth JRB....a major party foul not to track it down....even I found it on my first day after reporting in...:)

On my list for next trip, thanks. That's not too far away from where I work when I visit my company HO. I saw some military jets overhead this week, always nice to hear and see.

Nothing like a good burger thread in August.
 
My new obsession is HopDaddy Burgers. None in Ft Worth, but 3 in Dallas and many more in Texas, AZ, TN & one in Denver. They take 5 Guys to a whole new level. Their motto is "Hot Buns & Cold Beer". (And their shakes are amazing!!!)
**I don't quite get the Whataburger obsession either, but I am not a Texas native, so that could be the reason?

Perhaps a Dallas one is near Love Field, where I fly in and out on SW. I am not averse to evening field trips either. Thanks, another one for the list.

Chop house burgers in Arlington, TX. It's a blend of smoked brisket and ground beef. Was featured on DDD.

At the risk of losing my native Texan card, I'm not a fan of Whataburger either.

I go back to Fort Worth end of this month for a few days, then again in Sep and a week in Oct.

My intent with this thread was just to have summer fun, but I am lucking out with new places to try. I am a road warrior again, and scour Yelp, Food Network, Open Table and other sources for places to try.
 
For those of you that ever get to the New Jersey, I'd recommend the "The Murder Burger" at the Shannon Rose (Irish Pub). From the menu:

"THE MURDER BURGER As featured on Foodbeast.com
Served on a brioche roll with American and pepper jack cheese, sautéed onions, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato, house-made pickles, ketchup and Thousand Island dressing.
Dipped in our Harp beer batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy.

Notice the last part of the description - this is basically a beer battered deep fried fully loaded cheeseburger. I'm sure it's a low calorie meal.
 
Pro-tipnon In-N-Out fries- you can ask them to make the fries extra crispy and they will dunk them again ;)

I asked for well done fries once. Imagine a french fry with the crunch of a potato chip, i.e. potato chip sticks.
