C/O '26 parents - place to commiserate and share. Roller coaster for the next 3 years!

DD has been sick for the past three weeks. Did not have COVID but sinusitis and bronchitis. Whatever meds they gave her at BMU were useless. Makes me very angry knowing that she is not getting the right treatment. Spoke to her on Friday evening and she is still hacking away. I'm beginning to think it's the mold around the vents that's causing her to be so sick.
I get it - I have not been happy with BMU at all - I just have mine go elsewhere for care and she reports back to BMU. Have her go to an urgent care next time she has a break from the yard. BTW my daughter has NO AC in her room and when I went to visit her room for 2C parent weekend I was shocked at how the vent looked!!!! really gross....she and roommates have submitted many work orders to the chain of command but nothing!

... so the rollercoaster continues. Prayers to you all. We took out this "medical" rollercoaster by moving next to the yard. We found an Urgent Care in Edgewater about 12 minutes from the gate. Last year DS went to ER and waited for five hours to see a doctor. Nuts!
Interesting move so far. Our neighbors include 5 squirrels (2 babies), 1 neighbor cat, 1 rabbit, and a variety of birds. DS only visits about 1.5x per month to do laundry and eat one wholesome home cooked meal. He refers to Bancroft as his "home home" and our house is his "home." His friends are second generation Americans including an athlete who overheard him talking to his mom in European language. After Protramid, the Sub/SWO plans went Kaput. His new interest is rotary aviation. I'm sure this will change at least one more time.
Navy football is looking sharp except did not pull a victory vs Memphis. Hoping there is a bowl game after the New Year. This is it for now.

If DS went to San Diego for PROTRAMID, the helo flight is pretty hard to beat. You takeoff and immediately fly over the harbor and then you are at the mercy of the pilots to show you cool stuff like flying around boats, sighting marine life, and flying along the beach. While I prefer the flight levels, rotary-wing is probably the closest thing to what most people envision flying to be like. You are low and slow (in terms of aviation), so you can see everything. The wind is also hitting you in the face when the doors are open.

That said, I'd encourage DS to keep Subs/SWO on the radar until after his enlisted cruise. In my experience, PROTRAMID is hit or miss when it comes to the ship stuff. Subs are on such a tight schedule that it makes it difficult to really get a feel for things (minus the really awesome crew and food). While I hope it is different now, most of my SWO week was convincing people that SWO isn't as bad as it sounds. While that reads well here, what that really meant was a lot of "SWO wasn't my first choice, but I made it and I can get out this tour or I can do some cool Ivy League MBA or a shore tour somewhere like Amazon and get out in three more years. You can also go to a lot of other communities after getting your pin." No meaningful mention of operations, deployment locations, cool ports, etc. Not exactly the best sales pitch.

I've gotta check with my kid if his room still got the Alpha yesterday since he's still SIQ. Said he was feeling a little better, but the cough is coming on now.

So, he gets to do it next Monday.

It is interesting that they don't have an isolation wing anymore. He said his roommate is in their room with him as usual, but hasn't gotten sick (yet). That just makes the whole thing ripe for another wave to take over the Yard.

Guess this is just our new norm now!

DS got COVID 2x last year, and I thought it crazy that his roommates kept going in and out of the room to class, meals, etc. and he was "isolated". I'm not sure what isolated means to them?! :confused2::scratch: I hope your DS feels better soon.

same with my girl - she was isolated in her room with roommates - they never got covid! so strange with such a small area to be confined to

And with 6 weeks coming up next week (already!!??), he is missing a bit of critical review stuff. Hope he does okay! I know he banks on doing well at each 6 week check to try and earn some weekends.

We sent DS with an room air purifier this year. Not sure it is helping as during 2C weekend room visit, the odor in the room was a mix of boy sweat, old musty building and two different scents of Febreeze car (yes car) deodorizers (which were affixed to the HVAC vent).

6 week exams coming up. Unless you have a professor that gives it to you at 5 weeks. 😉 2 down and a few more to go.

... so all I hear from DS is "I'm busy" and "pick laundry" and "bring food." With foreign language, he's becoming fluent because it was dormant in his brain cells since he was three. His roommate however hates it. Last parade, he borrowed a uniform because the laundry was late. He stayed in the middle of the formation so not to be seen with an oversized uniform. I saw a regimental staff not wearing a headgear during the parade.

Wearing the wrong length of sword can wreak havoc with a cover. And you can’t just say “back in a sec” and go retrieve it. Swords are sized by height. If too long, ears and covers are in the danger zone.

... so that explains why there's a cover on the grass where they conduct "eyes right."

Exactly. Considering having my dad’s sword engraved for our 2024. Want to make sure length is correct before the engraving.
DS said he tried to lend a sword to company mate last week but DS is not tall, and shipmate is over 6’3. Won’t fly.

... not trying to judge but that Mid regimental staff officer without cover was probably 5'2".

Since we are down in the weeds, note link below for sword vs height sizing. It’s for Navy Officer swords, but same guidance applies for the issued mid swords. Note the shortest swords only go as low as 5’6”. Anyone at that height or shorter is going to have to concentrate like a fiend on awareness of sword tip.

I would go ahead and engrave it. He can use it as a display piece on a sword rack if wrong size. Swords aren’t a required uniform item until the rank of LCDR. These days, only principals at a change of command ceremony or commissioning ceremony tend to wear them, if prescribed for the event. I think I wore mine maybe 6 times in my career. And it was actually DH’s, and the right size.

There is a current firstie that is like 4’9. I always wonder at her ability to manage her cover.

Good advice. My niece’s husband does custom silver work. Renowned artist. Going to enlist his skills. If there were room I would list my grandfather but not sure there is. Will explore the option.

Fun to think about. Three sets of initials with commissioning dates?
