C/O '28 parents - place to commiserate and share. Roller coaster for the next 3 years! 🎢

DS got his fleet cruise orders yesterday for 2nd block. Nice knowing now when he'll be home prior to that and then after that (was already scheduled for leave in 3rd block). Shaping up to be a nice summer.

My kiddo is currently on his cruise and he did not have scheduled leave this summer (volentold to take summer school) but (in texts here and there) it sounds like their CO may release them a tiny bit early so he is hopeful to be able to squeeze in a few days home over Juneteenth before block 2 starts. Excited to see him but not as excited to pay my optional tuition (to American Airlines in the form of last minute peak fares) 😂
Anyway summer training on the ship is so far so good and has him excited for a potential SWO career, so… mission accomplished, Big Navy.

Anyone have a count on how many from 2028 aren't coming back?

I was a little shocked when my kid told me a couple company-mates DORed. Really sad to see them leave.
 
DS told us that, as far as he knows, all of his friends and company mates are returning. I guess that could change after the summer trainings, though.

This was when DS lost a couple of friends to DOR, since it is the last chance to leave without repayment. One failed a last-chance PRT and was out-processing while others were signing 2for7. That was a little rough.

Yeah I was just shocked to see these kids leave after two years, tight friendships, etc. I guess reality set in for some of them.
 
Ten percent or more separate from each class, both voluntarily and involuntarily. It should not come as any shock that a number of rising second class DOR every year.

Maybe sad, but not surprising.
 
Do we have an exact date for 2-for-7 signing? Is it the morning of the first day of classes, Aug 17? I know parents can't attend. Was just curious as to when it is. Sorry if this was asked and answered.
 
Pretty sure the ENS dude signed his on the Friday or Saturday before classes started?? The pic I had posted on FB was marked as Saturday.

Thanks, you two. That was what I was thinking, but hadn't heard for sure. DS is knee-deep in detailing, so don't want to ask him. He probably doesn't even know anyway. Lol.

My class is the 50 year link in the chain and this is the latest info from the Yard to us:

The Academy has been revising many of the Link in the Chain events and the Commitment is no different. The day’s events devolved over the years from formal dinners and lectures to now just holding an evening reception in Dahlgren Hall. It will be from 7-8:30 pm (1900-2030) on Friday, 14 Aug. We are limited to 50 people to attend the Reception.

That day the Class of 2028 will be doing several waves of commitment signing by Batts/Company in Memorial Hall. The Class of '78 are welcome to also attend the signing ceremonies throughout the day.

I'm not positive at this point but I have a lot scheduled the day before and the day after the event so It's likely that I will not be able to attend.

Trying to get over the surprise and shock that some mids, after just coming off cruises, summer trainings, and leave with just two days before 2-for-7 signing, have DoR'd. My mid's roommate is one of them. Really shocked.

Congrats to all your parents on your kids' signing on Friday. They've come a long way!

For some, that summer training probably seals a decision they’d been contemplating for a while. The up-close-and-personal view of active duty helps them see themselves leading sailors or Marines — or not. For some, reality bites and that’s OK. Better to realize it then than after commissioning. USNA plans for a certain level of attrition at this point, so no real surprise to them.
 
It takes a lot of courage to give it an effort, experience all aspects of the academy/fleet, and make a decision to DOR days before your classmates sign their commitments.

It is so much easier to just sign along with everyone else and “suck it up” for seven years minimum. Best of luck to those who make the decision to take a different path. To those who do sign, you have a lot to look forward to!
