C/O '29 "Official" Waitlist Thread

Looks like NSI for my guy. Don't see him reapplying for 2030. He will be registering for 300 level classes this time next year. He wants to be a Naval Officer more than attending the Academy. Delaying commissioning and giving up a master's degree doesn't make sense for him. For everyone who got in and for those that did not, no matter your circumstance, DO GREAT THINGS! Your country needs great leaders and great leaders you will be.
This is how my son feels. He is headed to NSI end of the month and with NROTC scholarship is more pumped for the program of Corp of Cadets at Virginia Tech. It will be a hard first year so the thought of doing two freshman years that are similar and hard is not appealing especially when Tech is accepting over 60 college credits since he took a rigorous college course load with Governor school in high school. The goal is Naval officer and good training and he will also have more of a college experience once the first tough year passes. Things happen for a reason

DS just checked again this evening. The USNA door for 2029 officially closed which, like most of you (us), he (we) expected. NSI 2 is on the horizon and he is adjusting his sails for Great Lakes and Yale later this summer. You all have all been a fantastic group to commiserate with and lean on. I want to especially thank Capt MJ - you are one of the most insightful, considerate, and gracious people I have never had the opportunity to meet. You have been our family’s personal Yoda - we have dozens of screen snags of your advice and guidance from various discussions saved for future reference. Kid and adults alike!!! An electronic “thank you” sorta rings hollow - maybe someday it can be in person. All the very best to everyone, God bless and keep you and your future midshipmen. GO NAVY!!!!

Those are kind words indeed. Thank you.

I don’t get as much opportunity to exercise servant leadership since my Navy career and then corporate career ended, and I now do consulting and contract work in veteran career transition. I enjoy the community here, a culture of giving.

For all those considering reapplying . . . hold off for a few months. You'd be surprised how many young men and women absolutely LOVE where they land -- be it another SA or a civilian college. I've told the story many times of the young person who went to VA Tech (not Corps of Cadets) after a USNA TD, reapplied and was appointed. Really, really struggled with whether to leave b/c loved VT so much. Ultimately did and was very successful at USNA, but it wasn't the slam dunk decision that s/he expected.

Also, perspectives change. What seemed SO important as a kid/high-schooler (attending USNA) may not seem as important after 6 months doing something else. Or, maybe the desire still burns.

Give 100% to whatever you do next. Keep in mind that, for MANY young people, your "second" choice their first choice -- they wanted it as much as you wanted USNA and would give a lot to be in your place.

As I often say, there are many paths to USNA, many paths to commissioning, and many paths to success in life. Often, you end up on the path that God, fate, etc. wants you to be. Embrace it.

TD for me too, thank you to everyone who gave advice! This is a great community, and it was nice contributing to it during my brief time as an applicant. Plan B is solid, but not that excited about it. I'm not sure if I'll reapply. If I decide to do so, are there any parents who would be open to DM about the reapplication process? Or share your thoughts here? I'll check out Capt. MJ's links in the meantime.

Would be totally happy to share my DS reapplication and his journey of his year in college!

My thoughts are that YOU will do great wherever you go because you have a winner’s attitude!

I'd be happy to share. I had two kids go through the reapplication process.

On Thursday, our DS headed to Great Lakes and NSI. His dream throughout the college application process has been to get into a great school in aerospace engineering and get a Naval commission upon graduation. Like many on this forum--both applicants and families of applicants who are veterans-- it has always been about service. I remember my DS telling me as a junior in high school that he felt fortunate to have so many opportunities already in his life, and he thought he should pay something back. He studied several of the great philosophers in high school, all of whom said that the way to find meaning in your life is "to serve" or be of service. All the news coverage yesterday on D-Day's 81st Anniversary reminds all of us of the motivation and sacrifice of those who serve in the military. On Thursday, our DS closed his USNA application portal, where, like many of you, he is waitlisted and 3Q, saying that he needed to give 100% to the NSI experience and focus on the NROTC program at Ga Tech as an entering freshman. He reminded me that his ultimate goal or dream was not to go to USNA, but to serve as a Naval officer. USNA and GA Tech with a 4-year ROTC scholarship both lead to the same oceans, as Capt MJ said. So, for most of you still reading this portal, I think you share our DS's dream: to be of service, however you get there. Someday, when I hope you will take your first salute upon commissioning or have some old grizzled veteran like me see you in your uniform and say "Thank you for your service", it will not matter HOW you got there, only WHY you got there. God speed on your journey and all its twists and turns. You may not get what you desire, but you will more frequently get what you need.
My DD is a GT Aerospace major and GT NROTC Midshipman 2nd Class . Welcome , and GO JACKETS!

Son just turned down in portal. So sad after this wait. No encouraging email, just “application closed, turned down”. Virginia 06, Senator nom, Presidential nom, congressional nom, top 5 percent BGO interview, husband is 94 grad, became a supported heavyweight crew recruit later in April, Eagle Scout, 5 Time varsity letters in football and tennis, co captain tennis, 1400 SAT, 4.4 GPA, did Governor school STEM program 10-12 grade taking college level courses and then base high school in afternoon for AP classes in sports, soup kitchen volunteer, student ambassador, NHS, etc…..I could go on but I will not. This definitely stings but after having application in since end of Aug at least we can move forward fully to back up. fulll NROTC scholarship to Corp of Cadets and engineering at VA Tech! Navy just lost one of the best but he is in great spirits and will thrive at Tech so we march forward with plans!

Good luck to all, waitlist is moving so hang on to your hats! I will keep you all in my prayers
So sorry to here this... we are up the street in Virginia 11. Such a tough area to apply from. So happy he will be a Hokie! Not a bad Plan B!
You said your husband was a 94' grad flying F-18? Our 21' is out in Lemoore at the F-18 rag. Good times!! We personally know the Admiral your son will be with at NSI. He is in good hands! We now a lot of USNA 94' folks... small world in the Navy. Best of luck to your DS!! Congrats! He will do awesome and thrive in the Corps!

Small world! We were stationed in Lemoore when hubby was F 18 flight instructor back in 2004 before we were sent to Japan. Awesome for your son!

A small suggestion for you for your icon....

I should change it! It was hubby’s callsign when he was fighter pilot! When he was a newbie and they had a Det to Iwo Jima when we lived in Japan the other pilots tried to convince him there was a McDonald’s on the island. He looked and clearly there was not and the character name stuck😆

Another tip for reapplying is give yourself the option and finish the application. For me, I wanted to give up halfway through my third application and finish my time at my college. It was my parents and mentor who sat me down and said I owed it to myself (and to them who were with me every step of the way) to at least finish the application. Ended up getting waitlisted and then appointed and immediately accepted it without a second thought. Best decision of my life and wouldn’t have had the opportunities I have had without my parents and friends telling me to give it a shot.

You might find yourself loving your college and decide not to start another application, and that’s great! However, if you do start it give yourself the chance and finish it so that you can make a decision if you do receive an appointment.

If you hadn’t finished it, your outcome would have been very different. AND you would have ‘always wondered’ what would have happened if you had finished it.

I always say, don’t close doors until you have to. Keep them open and make your decision with what’s available to you.

Such a great story, and example of ‘what if’s’. The only hard no is an application not completed.
