Cadet Andrew Maisano/lacrosse/Lowe's Finalist

My 2 sons and I were at the final four games this weekend, and they brought Andrew out at halftime of the first game, and gave him the award. They interviewed him for a few minutes in front of 45,000 people, over the stadium sound system. He represented the school very well, as you would expect!! Nice job!

It was a great lacrosse weekend in Baltimore!

This is a ridiculous way to either choose or depict merit. All folks are doing here is playing into a Lowes "viral" ad campaign.

FYI - the fan vote only counts for part of the total.

From the award website:
The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across nine different sports. The acronym “CLASS” stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School™.

The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award celebrates the loyalty of seniors that honor a four-year commitment to their university. The Senior CLASS Award™ recognizes these student-athletes for great achievement during competition and in their community while staying in school.

Award winners are determined by a selection process that includes, NCAA Division I college coaches in each respective sport, national media, and fans. The voting process determines the winner in addition to a Senior CLASS All-America Team.

Public fan voting via text messaging and on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award web site takes place each year during the month leading up to the NCAA Championship.

They picked the right guy...4.06 GPA......Unless they cahnged academics drastically....it's not what you werestudying that was hard...it was the way they tested (extremely hard) that made it difficult......

No one else was really close academically....after watching the last three seasons - they get the right guy........He is dang fine lax player also. He was Johnny on the spot all season.......And yes...I voted twice a day most days......The AF guy was very solid also. None of the nominees were slackers....it was just obvious who the winner "should have been"...and the system worked....again....

The fan vote winner doesn't always win the award- as in the case of Elizabeth Betterbed last Fall. As WAMom68 quoted - the fan vote is only one factor in the selection process.

FWIW Think this is "cheesey" and doesnt show true respect for a great athlete. It is merely serving to fulfill Lowes "viral" advertising campiagn objectives. Take a second and ask yourself - how can one person having more people willing to tap out this "vote" than another signify anything?
