Hi all!

I was just wondering how leave works at USAFA and how it might compare to leave at USNA or USMA. Their FAQ site did provide a bit of help, but it didn't really get too specific on restrictions, specifically on how far a cadet can travel (they did mention boundaries, but they didn't really explain exceptions to the boundaries and how one might be able to travel further). Any help would be great! Thanks in advance

Newly appointed and you're already thinking about leave :D Focus on BCT then Recognition first! Kidding aside, I do know you can travel abroad but there is a lot of paperwork to complete from what I have heard.

Cadets get three weeks in the summer. If they want to leave the country, they must file paperwork and have that approved. So, leaving the country is possible, just not definite.

For weekends, it depends on if they have a pass. Passes are easier to come by for upperclassmen than for doolies. Many cadets drive 2-3 hours to ski on weekends. For longer weekends, some fly home. This past President's Day weekend, I personally picked up four cadets who needed a ride Monday evening back to USAFA from the airport. They were 2 and 3 degree cadets. I assume they had permission from their respective AOCs for their trips.

According to this site:

"Cadets must remain in the boundary limits unless authorized to exceed for extended limits, passes, temporary duty locations (TDY) or breaks. Specifically, they must stay within County Line Road in Monument (North), Security/Widefield (South), Manitou Springs (West), and Marksheffel Road (East)."

I would assume going skiing or flying home would be past these boundaries, so I was just wondering how one would be authorized to leave past these boundaries.

Thank you again :) I do live overseas so that is definitely great to know.

If you leave the Colorado Springs area you will have to fill out a Form 99. Features a lot of info on travel and may be denied if you aren't in good standing. You can also get restricted depending on your unit (which can be class, wing, squadron, class within squadron, etc). As mentioned, you must have passes to spend, which will be few as a doolie.

Thank you!

Hmmm-- I'm a sponsor parent. I live outside this boundary. Cadets with a sponsor pass can come to my house, even as doolies. I believe these are only the boundaries for those without a pass. Doolies are allowed sponsor passes at least every Sunday. To go to their sponsor's house, they can leave these boundaries. If they have another pass, I'm sure they can use it to ski. Without a pass, I believe they can borrow a car and go to Chick-fil-a, provided they do so within these set boundaries.

The website says that doolies are given 2 weekend overnight sign-out passes per month (starting in the spring). Is that true? I know USNA mids are only given one overnight leave for the entire semester, so just wanted to confirm. Thank you again!

Not terribly sure about sponsors outside the springs (I'd trust whatever you have to say in that matter). You can use a unlimited Sunday passes on Sunday to go anywhere, but most cadets use it to go to their sponsor's because they have nowhere else to go. Otherwise, you will receive two day passes a month which can be used on Saturdays or the short period on weekdays between LMD and ACQ, as well as one overnight pass a month that can cover reveille Saturday to ACQ Sunday

USNA mids have opportunities to earn many more than the basic allowances in Midshipmen Regulations.

"Starting in the Spring" looks like the key here. I read that to mean, after recognition. Therefore, probably true...... Recognition is mid March

Sponsors must live within 50 miles of USAFA. This includes Denver's southern suburbs.

That's fair. The only time I remember hearing a concrete figure was 50 miles on Parent's Weekend. If you need to go a little farther that can surely e arranged through your AOC.

Did you win a VP nom or were you nominated by your country? Interesting to see an oversea candidate too
I have a permanent address back in the states, so I received nominations from my home district+state.

International midshipman and cadets are at the federal academies as part of DoS, DoD, DHS, DOT agreements to further relationships between countries, with their tuition often part of an aid package. Their own governments choose them, and they must meet criteria to be accepted. They get the degree and a commission or role with home country service or government.

U.S. citizens residing outside the U.S., whether permanently or temporarily, apply for nominations from the district where they would have voting rights. VP nom too.
