Can anyone advise as to cadet life at UNG and/or Norwich? A couple of specific questions- are cadets able to hang out with/interact with civilian students? How much free time do cadets have during the week days? And what about weekends? Are cadets restricted to campus? And is there an opportunity on weekends to do other non cadet related activities, hang out with civilians or just chill out? Specifically asking about these two colleges only. Thanks all!

Just got back from Norwich yesterday. Pre-enrollment visit. Beautiful place. The Cadets and the civilian students do mix at the campus. Your Rook year will be very occupied. Privileges are earned slowly and in small increments. Free time is very limited. Rook year anyway... Cadets can leave campus eventually. Northfield is the closest small town. Montpelier is ten miles away. Burlington and its airport are about fifty. If you are serious, call them with these questions.
Our visit was fantastic and the staffers throughout our whole enrollment and visit process have been superb. Both the AROTC and the AFROTC reps were excellent. DD was awarded scholarships for both so we had to look closely at both programs. She was also accepted at VMI and the Citadel.

Norwich was outstanding in overall value.

We are going with Norwich.

My DS is wrapping up his first year at UNG. Your free time is more restricted during the first semester to make sure you are focused on your academics and settle in with the corps. You will have duties and be in quarters the first semester, and there are more closed weekends in the fall. You will be in uniform most of the time. You will be interacting with non-Corp
members on a daily basis so I would not worry about that. Many restrictions are removed the second semester as long as your GPA is strong and you are performing as required in other areas. Two great aspects about UNG from my perspective: their critical languages program seems excellent and the cyber security program is worth looking in to if you are interested. My DS took the opportunity to attend SLI over the summer allowing him to knock out 8 credits in his chosen language and become acclimated to the school. As for free-time pursuits, he has picked up fishing, roughing it camping, and rock climbing as well as discovered new hiking paths. I think you really need to visit the schools and weigh out what you want carefully. I know that UNG has an overnight program coming up on April 7. Maybe it is not too late to register if you can get there.

DS spent 4 days at Norwich this weekend since he's an accepted member of the corps of Cadets.

Hanging out during Rookdom shouldn't happen, there will be time for fun, but rookdom is designed to get you into healthy habits and get your order of merit as high as possible. You will have free time about an hour a day, but you can't go to Dunkin Donuts are the Mill or listen to music, game, or watch movies until after Recognition (usually Mid-March). You'll have classes with civilians and study groups are welcome with civilians. Your platoon mates will be your same major and bunked near you which will better morale, easier to make friends and making the most of free time.

Rookdom is based on campus living only Unless you're an athlete or a member of the Civic Scholar program. Those are the only 2 instances rooks can leave campus until recognition. Your only shot to wear civvies too. DS can't wait to start the CS program, he's Getting his EMT, Wilderness EMT and will be volunteering on the school/town ambulance as well as volunteering with the boy scouts.

Weekends still have some structure. For instance company PT tests unique to their job, rucks, marches, and company contests all happened Saturday this week. Sundays are more free time but you'll not be able to hang out outside your room or the room dining hall until recognition.

Rooks must be in uniform if within 50 miles of campus.
After the holidays the rest area 49 miles south of the campus is a popular changing spot for returning rooks.

Unless travelling for athletics or specific community service.
