Cadet Ranks

Seniors are officer ranks. Juniors are senior NCO’s. Sophomores are all C/SSgts. Freshmen are all C/Amn.
Rank comes with position and changes every semester. Only 6 C/Col and 5 C/CMSgt in the wing. Highest rank within a squadron is C/LtCol. Most of wing staff are C/LtCol if seniors and C/SMSgt if juniors.

The following also gives you an idea of the various cadet ranks by class.
Hate to be that guy but there are 9 C/Col in all of USAFA: Wing top three, 4 group commanders, + Wing Honor and Wing Character.

So how do cadets achieve those Honor ranks? Or the wing and group commanders? And what do they do exactly?

They apply and compete for the job through an interview process. Usually, the wing commander is chosen first and works with the permanent party to select their staff (group commanders and wing staff officers) through another interview process. Group commanders and wing staff officers choose their subordinates (squadron commanders and group staff officers) again through an interview process. Squadron commanders choose their staff in the squadrons. Throughout the process, active duty permanent party members help cadets make the selections and can veto along the way to curb nepotism and the like.
Honor and Character chairperson are selected by committee and choose their staff in a similar competitive interview process.
People cycle into these jobs every semester with a special staff for summer programs.
