Cadets instructed by USAFA leadership not to use words like "Mom" and "Dad"

Independent nonprofits are able to set whatever standards they want for their fellowships, internships, or scholarships. There are plenty of all of those that are "discriminatory" because they specify that only certain individuals with certain specifications are able to apply. It has nothing to do with any of the service academies

So it's not about the nonprofits, this is my question... Would you be OK if USAFA promoted a fellowship that said If you are a black gay female, this program isn’t for you? Or replace black gay female or cisgender man with whatever your DS or DD happens to be, are you still OK with it?

I think the Academies would be in serious trouble if they promoted a fellowship that excluded other groups.

Letting their attendees know about opportunities offered by external organizations that exist for segments of their enrolled population is not in any way objectionably discriminatory.

Is a scholarship that is offered by a veterans association that is only available to children of service members objectionably discriminatory ?

If so, then you should be railing against the presidential nomination for service academy applicants.

However, Veteran's Status is not a protected category under federal EEO statutes:

Maybe I’m naive but couldn’t we just let anyone apply to anything and select the winners based on merit? I know I’m going to get annihilated for this one.

It’s hard to be United when we are constantly asked to check boxes and identify as ‘types’ of this or that.

I am a white, straight, middle-aged, married male with 2 daughters who are service academy attendees. I have never been disadvantaged by my status. In fact, the opposite is demonstrably true, as compared to other traditionally disadvantaged segments of our population. It is fact that certain demographics have been treated unfairly in this society. Take your pick. Women, blacks, asians, hispanics, gays, transgenders. The list is wider than that. That discrimination has been somewhat mitigated over time. But we still do not have an equal playing field. There is still work to be done to ensure that all individuals are treated equally in this society. As traditionally impacted groups gain standing, traditionally advantaged groups can perceive that they are losing standing. That is the cost imposed by a truly egalitarian society. But that is a cost I am more than willing to pay as someone who tries to live by the golden rule.

with no boxes to check

So all potential SA sports types have to compete academically with the brains , with no extra points as far as admissions, for being a top sports type?

So much for high quality sports teams , and future Marines, but they will be much smarter sports teams.

So much for beating ND football team at anything but SAT scores .

No extra box to check or help to get more woman enrolled? Physically the woman will compete with men and the strongest most fit will get in and the weaker will not? So much for a balanced class that reflects the country they serve.

No extra help for that potentially very smart kid from west Baltimore who comes from a crappy home and a crappy school and does not have nearly the same test and school and extra advantages of so many well schooled affluent kids?

Those with unearned advantages based totally on luck of birth should keep and build on those advantages when it comes to SA admissions.

The classes would certainly be different looking than they are today. But there would certainly be a lot fewer boxes to check for those whose concern is about checking boxes.

The Supreme Court is set to consider cases regarding Race-based admissions at Harvard and UNC. This will be a major test of Affirmative Action and I would think colleges and universities are going to watch this closely.

Unearned advantages based on luck of birth?

So the valedictorians who aced the SATs and started 3 varsity sports, captain of all - were lucky and we diminish their hard work?

They are “nerds?”

And those same ones who excel at tier 1 majors at SAs while maxing their PRTs, 4 years on a triathlon team, no honor code offenses - aren’t as worthy as say a football player who had honor offenses and poor grades?

Yes born on 3rd base and they think they hit a 3 bagger all by themselves. They were born lucky. They were born with advantages.

Like being a member of a royal family, based on nothing but the luck of who your parents are, kids from affluent families, that have a ton of advantages will usually outdue those poorer kids without advantages. And that advantage will last for generations.

can anyone seriously argue that this is wrong?

The best schools, the best SAT support, the best very expensive club teams, the best sports and academic trainers, the most free time so they can devote themselves to resume building like after school leadership positions.

Is anyone saying that race or sex or prior poor school or academic situation, or exceptional sports ability should not be taken into significant consideration as far as SA admissions?

id like to see people make that argument.

A pure merit system with no boxes to check , based on physical strength, test scores, lack of wavers, where only those who test out the absolute best should be admitted .

Our SA classes will certainly look a, lot different. In fact they could likely look a lot more like the class of 1948.

My son wasn’t from an affluent family. My son went to a public school. He earned his appointment with hard work.

They have a wcs system that takes into account more than just academics.

So those D1 athletes didn’t work hard at their sports? And genetics didn’t help them at all?

So admissions has other checkboxes to form a well rounded class. So the merit system should be different after induction?

People are born into whatever situation and demographic God put them in. What those people (kids) do in their particular advantage or disadvantage situation is what matters most.
Growing up I admired certain athletes, rockstars, and movie stars. As I grew older, I realized they weren’t anything I would want to be. All the fame and fortune came at a cost, and the cost was high. Watching people who had the world by the a$$ blow it in some form or another was a real eye opener.
There are also many super privileged kids who grow up to be absolute losers and only have their parents to show for their good fortune, and they tanked their opportunities and privileges.
Then I look at under privileged people who came from less than nothing with their environment holding them back, and they seem to find a way out and become something no one would’ve expected. Some might say that’s few and far between, but there are many who start up a small business and successfully run it or whatever job they are doing. They may not be rich with money, but their wealth isn’t measured that way.
Others come from nothing and rise to the super top. I’ll use Giannis Antetokounmpo as an example.
Bottom line comes to accountability. We are all accountable for what we do or don’t do with our lives. If we praise only ourself for good fortune, or blame others for our misfortune, we are failing accountability.
Let’s all do something positive today and be somebody!

Once upon a time as a baby boomer enlisted I received orders to a seminar and to report in civilian clothes (so no one would feel intimidated). This was during the end of the draft and a lot of racial turmoil in the military. Three Senior Master Seargents showed up in uniform and were informed that they were told not to wear uniforms. One asked if he was required to be there? Yes. Then this is a required military formation and I am required to wear my uniform. They then left and probably went to the Club. There is nothing new under the sun only endless repackaging.

It's not my Air Force anymore
