Cadre Taking Questions

For anyone concerned, especially any moms out there, a 'beat session' is just a heavy physical workout. They actually don't beat the basics.

BCT was different for 2017. Their class had the highest retention rate in many years. Your BCT commander made it a point that this will not be the same. BCT will be more physically intense and you will have less breaks than 2017 did. You should be proud of this.

What was the attrition rate for bct last year? How different was it from the average in previous years?

Once. Generally, the AF doesn't like anything under 20mm that it can't mount on an aircraft.
There are some exceptions, like CRO/STO and some Security Forces and OSI.
The Combat Shooting Team at USAFA is a GREAT opportunity, if you like shooting and learning.

The two biggest clubs which offer shooting opportunities are probably Combat Shooting and Sandhurst. Sandhurst shoots a lot less than Combat Shooting but a lot more than the rest of the wing...

Thanks guys! Ill look into them! I also was wondering which type of boots i should purchase that would prepare me best. Im shopping from pxexhange.com for reference. (I know i dont really have to but im gonna buy boots either way id like to get the right pair!)

Okay, this may sound like a silly question but...are we issued socks? Or do we bring those ourselves?

'Cause I'd hate to show up to I-Day with a gazillion pairs, and have someone say 'And now, here are your official Air Force socks!' ...But I would also equally hate showing up to I-Day and realizing the pair I have on are will be my only pair for all of Beast!

So in either case, your answer will be extremely appreciated.

I'd get as close to the issued Belleville boots if you want boots to train in before I-Day. If you want to get Nikes, Rockys, etc, definitely wait until you're in your academic year squadron to find out their policy on non-issued boots.

You'll be issued all the socks you could ever dream of...

I think your guidance should be to bring what is on your list and if it's not on your list (something pretty basic like socks) then you can assume you will be issued what is necessary. Also regarding the boots, agree that you should buy as close to exactly what is specified in your instructions.

That's not nice.

I'm sorry it just fit too well.

Just because someone's been through doesn't make them an expert or a source of reliable info. Nothing's constant except change. An individual's experience is solely their own. It's all subjective. Many may go through the same experiences and walk away from it with completely varied opinions. For those seeking advice or a leg up by knowing ahead of time what to expect, take what some offer here as "advice" with a grain of salt and bear in mind that the't 90% of doolies in the past that did not even consult this forum in the past have managed to get through BCT. I don't understand why some feel the need to give away the ending before watching the movie? The journey is half the fun. It's just like summer camp on steroids:) Over 46,000 have joined the Long Blue Line. They were once basics that managed fine without anyone giving out spoiler alerts. Each squads are run differently. Each rule or regulation can change. The status quo changes all the time. If only I knew then what I know now, should have taken the time to make the most of what's remaining free time before I-day and none of the bubblewrap nonsense. Congratulations and best wishes to class of '18!

There's a lot of wisdom in this post-you'll see people trying to figure out what's coming next during basic, freshman year, and recognition. For these guys, training(especially recognition) seems especially long. It's good to try and prepare yourself, especially physically, but it's honestly best to not overthink things before you even show up.

Are we allowed to bring combat boots to use during bct? If so which brand (s) are allowed?

Read the guidance in the Instructions to Appointees booklet, it should give you a brand and model to go off of.

Of all the things prior cadets have told me about physical preparedness, conditioning was the most important. What is the maximum distance we can expect to run in one sitting? I would like to know if I need to keep pushing for distance or to start focusing more on intervals and such for my 1.5 mile time. Thanks!
