My daughter is attending USAFA as an exchange student from USCGA and I am trying to figure out the differences (after finally figuring out one academy!) and could use some help.

Concerning Thanksgiving break......
Generally when will most cadets be released. The calendar says as of LMD ion the Tuesday before Thanksgiving......do most cadets leave that evening? And what is the best bet if flying....Colorado Springs or Denver? Is there a shuttle of any sort to Denver, or do they need to drive/get a ride?

The calendar says that the cadet wing returns on Monday December 1 by 1900 hours. Do most cadets return on Monday or Sunday evening?

Of less importance is finals week but I'll still ask....
It looks like the last finals are on Thursday, December 19th. Assuming there is a final for each class (is there?), at what time would a cadet be released to come home for Christmas. What could be different in this case is that she would be leaving USAFA for good, so any idea if there would be any time added for out-processing?

Thanks all!

It depends on flights, when their particular class is done and how far they are traveling. As it gets closer she will be able to tell you when she can leave.
There is a shuttle that goes, but sometimes its just as easy to catch the flight from COS, since there could be a long time waiting between the flight and shuttle schedule. You have to consider time waiting etc, and the weather may not make traveling by shuttle a very good idea, that time of year, especially since the time they must be back is pretty strict.

This can depend. LMD for the longest time was 3pm. Last year suddently it was 12pm. Most cadets will leave that day. Where you fly from generally depends on where you are flying too. Denver has more flights, COS is a little closer. My suggestion would be don't worry about trying to book something now, you will have plenty of time once they announce what time LMD will be. USAFA does run a shuttle, but an outgoing cadet can always get a ride from another as well.

This probably depends on where you are coming home from and what time your flights get in. Most will return at the last minute possible. USAFA only cares that you return with enough time to safely get back by 1900. If your flight is delayed for some reason, they won't hold it against you.

In regards to finals. You really won't know that until she gets her finals schedule. That can vary by many, many days. LMD is when each cadet finishes "their" last final. So some will finish on the 19th, but some might finish 2-3 days earlier.

Check both COS & DEN for flights. Believe it or not, sometimes it's cheaper out of COS. DEN often offers more options though, and later flights east.
I recently booked 2 one-way fares; DEN to Dulles, then National to COS for the return and it was cheaper than a DEN-Dulles-DEN round-trip!
Last year DS had red eye booked but got to DEN much earlier and United honored his ticket on a much earlier flight (uniform probably helped)
Returned the Monday after T-giving.

Don't know about the out-processing deal, but know DS found out his finals schedule sometime around Parent's weekend which gave us plenty of time to book his flights.

What are the actual dates of the break periods for 2010 (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break)?
