Today I got a call from an officer at the Naval Academy. I didn’t have my phone on me when he called, but I’m the voicemail he mentioned “that my status as an NROTC candidate has made me a candidate at the USNA.” What exactly does this call mean? I know it probably nothing but would love to hear what you guys have to say.

It means the Naval Academy is aware and can see the candidates who applied to NROTC. With this call, someone assigned a recruiting task has reached out to advise you could be a candidate to apply to the Naval Academy as well if you are interested in doing so, and haven't done so already. It does not mean more than this, or less without further data. What he says when you speak will be important. Are you interested in attending the Naval Academy? if so take a minute tonight to be informed about what the academy is as needed, and then call him back tomorrow with the details of your NROTC app in front of you, and see what happens. You mentioned previously being a high level athlete - is it in a Division sport or 2 that you could play for them? That could help. Good luck.

Did the caller identify himself/herself as a Blue & Gold Officer for the Naval Academy ? NROTC candidates often show up in the BGO Admissions portal (BGIS), and the BGO may be calling to introduce himself/herself. BGO's are not "recruiters", but are volunteers , often grads or parents, who promote awareness of the Naval Academy (the official title for the BGO is "Naval Academy Information Officer").

Applying for NROTC does not make you a "candidate" for the Naval Academy -- that is done by submitting a Preliminary Application on the USNA.edu website. Contact your local BGO (or whomever called you) if you are interested.

Are you a USNA Candidate for Class of 2024 (ie. "in the system") already?

I agree with Old Navy, reach out.
The one thing that you should be cognizant of if you have not opened a USNA package. You need a nomination for an appointment. Many MoCs have closed or about to close their applications for a nom by now. Talk to that person regarding how you will get a nom if the MoC has closed their files for the class of 2024
