Calling All Football Fans

And once they developed somewhat, navies were formed, which explains a lot in the apparent difference in the mental capacities of the two services.

We had to find someplace to stow our weaklings. Boats were the easiest answer!

As Billy Mitchell told the admirals as the blast spray settled over the sinking Ostfriesland...

And those ships are still out there with Naval Aviators flying off of them daily. And what are the decendents of Billy Mitchell doing? Flying drones? Wow! Exciting! Progress is good, especially if sometimes it all goes to the other guy.

The descendants of Billy Mitchell and Hap Arnold and Doolittle are flying helicopters in the Army.

The greatest heroes of Air Force...were in the Army. :thumb:

Well...I've never flown a "drone" although my nephew's life was saved by one. I've just tossed throttles forward and "gone forth into battle..."

And those ships...they're still out there...UNDER the water. We're not talking about the US Navy (the BLUE water navy)...they're out there on patrol, doing their job, protecting the sea lanes and our country and I salute them. I chose USAFA over USNA because I didn't want to put my family through a naval sea deployment. It takes a special person to do that; I wasn't that person.

BUT...when the Navy needs to hit a target...they usually call the AF for air refueling support because their jets have no legs...the AF does, etc...etc...

Different mission...same goal!

I still think the navy has the nicest uniforms (hey, whites with shoulder boards...talk about nice...) for day to day...but USMA's "ancient parades" are the finest!

Uh...no.

While our history is filled with outstanding US Army Air Forces people...we've done a fine job of supplying our own, thank you very much.

I think of folks like...

Bud Day
Lance Sijan
Dale Stovall
Jeff Feinstein
Steve Ritchie
Robinson Risner
Louis Sebille
John Walmsley
George Davis

And there are MANY others...

HOPEFULLY (Yeah, I'm a dreamer) we won't have enough opportunities to build our list to the size of the USA and USN.

But was not the entire purpose of the exercise to prove the obsolescence of the US Navy so that what austere funding was available at that time could be diverted to "modern" warfare? Probably the beginning of the long-standing feud between the air force and the Navy.

I still think the navy has the nicest uniforms
Are you sure this doesn't belong in the Don't Ask, Don't Tell thread?

I was surprised someone in the navy could actually pick up on that....seems like most would be numb to those kind of advances by now...

As you were.... :yikes:

Put away the Village People album... :shake:

You just have to understand...I'm old enough to have seen the AF change uniforms more than a few times...I mean, I remember when our CofS mandated the Delta Airlines-Type uniform!

Ever see an AF officer with sleeve rank similar to our naval/CG brethren?

I still shudder when I remember that...

Not only have I heard about that....and seen the rank posters...I've heard Maj. Gen. Fiel have a thing or two to say about it....

Okay...true confession time...I'll fess up...

Locked away in my home in a place I won't divulge...is 8x10 photographic evidence of this uniform with me and my...how do my sea-going brethren say it..

"...two and a half stripes..."

Thanks for the promotion gift Dad!

I'm typically wandering the 4th Floor E-Ring corridor on a weekly basis. Have to walk by the portrait of that particular CoS wearing that particular uniform.

I still shudder every time I pass it by. Still gets a "Thank Goodness we came to our senses and got rid of THAT" kind of remark from EVERY AF officer I've ever been with as we walk by it (including a few O-9s).

Like this one?

Always liked the ROTC "Tropical Worsted" uniform. Comfortable and held a crease. Air Force changed uniforms every year. It was a nightmare to keep up. Loved the powder blue shirt and the blue slacks after we changed from Kakies. That worked well for work. New "Blueberries" for Navy look ridiculous. Fall overboard and blend in to the ocean:yllol:

Original lyrics, for those who may have forgotten:

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one heckuva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame.
Hey! Nothing'll stop the Army Air Corps!

As an Army fan, this is how I taught my kids the song, right and proper and old school. Would have made their WWII AAC bombardier great-grandfather happy!

I was at that Navy-AF game at FedEx Field, and well remember the sad, sad turnout. They naturally assumed they’d draw a ton more people from the beltway area, but attendance did turn out to be a great embarrassment and very bad for TV. They’ll never try to fill a stadium that big again for that game. (Best fly-over I’ve ever seen, though not heard, with the B-2. Just stunning to see it live.)

I enjoy all the SA-related rivalries, to include the historic Navy-ND. I could never understand any Army fan that talked trash about AF. But then again, I’m old and I recall AF beating us lots, even in our good years, keeping that trophy from us, with a couple of national rankings to boot, including the current one. I have yet to attend a football game at AF, but it is very, very high on my football list. I’m trying to have my picture taken in front of every Div I-A stadium in the country. Can’t wait to get that Colorado Springs photo! Hoping maybe next year for Army-AF.

Thanks for starting this thread. I love all my fellow college football fans, and would tailgate and drink with you anytime. Also want to give a shout-out to all my suffering Penn State fans to hang in there!
