DS applied for a National Scholarship as a Sr. in H.S and ultimately was awarded a scholarship to a Jr. Military College (which he turned down) and then was not awarded a National Scholarship. Needless to say he was disappointed. He enrolled as an non-scholarship, uncontracted MSI (Army ROTC) his freshman year because he really wants to serve his country.
He learned last night that, after 2-years of hard-work, that he was awarded a 2-year camps based scholarship. DS is an average student (3.0 gpa) but really excels at ROTC. He has participated in 5 FTX during his 2 years and has received awards for his performance at 4 of them. He also volunteers and joins any and all ROTC events (Color guard, Ranger Challenge Team, Army 10-miler, recruiting events, etc.) His PT is off the chart. Cadre clearly see him as a strong leader.
My point is this - Never give up hope. Work hard, really hard and cadre and cadet leadership will notice. It's the same advice I would give anyone chasing a dream but campus based scholarships, up to the point he received one, seemed like Unicorns - now I know they're not. Good luck all!
