I will be taking DS on a campus visit to two schools on Friday. One is a NROTC host school, the other is it’s cross-town affiliate. We made an appointment for a tour with one of the cadre of the NROTC unit. I am just wondering if there are any do’s or don’ts that you folks can give me.

Nice options to consider:
  • Attend a naval science class
  • Attend a drill session
  • shadow a mid for a day
  • interview with a staff member with list of prepared questions
Things to avoid:
  • Wearing a JROTC uniform
  • Relying on his JROTC to "fit in"

Ha! LOL. He would never think of wearing his NJROTC uniform. We saw a young lady wear her uniform at a MOC’s academy day and it looked pretty silly to me.

He will make a list of questions on the 4 hour drive we have. Good idea. An alum. from DS’ high school is a mid at the school we are visiting and we might follow him a bit.

Dress nicely. A nice pair of shorts and a collared (polo) shirt will do. Slacks are even better but I expect he'll be more comfortable in shorts. But then I'm preaching to the choir.

Planned on Khaki shorts and a polo shirt (maybe his Boys State polo?). I am even dressing like that in my office these days. If it were winter, we would go with slacks. He did the jacket and tie and the whole works for his NROTC-MO interview. But I believe this visit is more informal.

Absolutely. When he joins his unit he'll need plenty of polo shirts. T-shirts were verboten while in DS's ROTC building, at least at his unit.
