Can’t Purchase Class Ring?

Is there a reason why the academy not issuing every cadet a standard class ring? After all, every cadet wears the same uniform, why should the ring be any different? The class ring is not your everyday jewelry, it was designed to celebrate your accomplishments as well a reminder of your commitments. Making the cadets pay for it is just wrong. As for how many my cadet brings home, my standard response to my DS "You did not join to make money right".
Cadets pay for their issued gear and uniforms. They get advanced pay for them at the beginning of doolie year and spend the next 2ish years paying that debt. Class rings are not part of a uniform. They do have the same design but differ in size, type of metal used, and stone chosen.

I know cadets are issued and paid for the gears, uniforms, etc. Is there a reason why the ring can be made in different metal types and stones? I get that the ring can be in different sizes for obvious reasons. Just like shoes, pants, etc. I would think the military pushed for uniformity and teamwork and discourage individuality.

It’s an optional piece of jewelry…not a uniform item. They allow plenty of individuality. Just look at the tattoo standards. Nothing wrong with individuality, and they respect it very well I think.

Rings are personal items, same as watches, necklaces, etc., allowed and covered by uniform and grooming regulations, with some personal choice allowed. Ditto hair. If we wanted true uniformity, no jewelry would be allowed in uniform. At all. Or same watch, same wedding ring - gets silly. And let’s not even get into hair or gender-specific uniform items.

It’s up to the cadet or midshipman as to whether they want to buy a ring. As I noted earlier, the ring companies keep those designs handy and continue to market class crest items and rings. If someone buys the steel ring with a simple engraved crest instead of a stone, and 25 years later, treats themselves to a sapphire with diamond dividers and 14 kt white gold, they can easily do so.
