Can I be more competitive?

STEM is more of just a subject field of modern studies, kinda just a mushed pile of all them together. Sure bio has been around for a long time BUT it wasn’t as widely studied as it has been in the 20th and 21st centuries. That being said I think chem is a much better route to take for USAFA and what I would be taking next year (senior year) if I had room but I’m instead taking a second physics course.

USAFA wants to see you have Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and another lab based science. Definitely take an AP class if you are able to and know that you will excel at it. I would recommend taking whatever you are more interested in, because that will likely make it easier for you to succeed in the class.

I’ve taken pre ap biology my ninth grade year.I will be in tenth grade during the fall.They told me to take pre ap chemistry then AP since it is one of the hardest courses at my school.They only offer regular physics!
 
My quick take away is this. Kudos to you for asking early on how to improve. Read up in the forums for 1 million threads on how to improve (slight exaggeration).
Do not make excuses for what you see are shortcomings in your resume. You will be competing against kids with more challenges and more struggles who nailed it. All of it. Embrace your challenges, overcome them. Find a work around. Those are your essay strengths. Everyone writes a "I want to be a pilot because essay". Admissions reads thousands of essays. Get their attention.
Stand out in interviews. Practice, but do not become robotic.
Be you. The best you. Rise above and find where you can lead. In any capacity to make a situation, club, team, service opportunity better.
 
I go to a small redneck school that most people have never heard of and no one has been appointed to a service academy from there that I know of!Would going to a small school unknown of help?????
 
@Missilerider I don’t think that coming from a small school puts you in any advantage over other applicants. The academy will still look at you the same way as the would look at a person who has gone to a high school with 2,000+ students. On the contrary, they would see if you are in the top percentage for your graduating class.

Small schools have big problems so I need to use my head and don’t get in trouble with the law!
 
USAFA admissions site says a computer class is a requirement to be academically competitive. How important is it if you don't have one but otherwise have a very good academic record?
 
The board will also look at your school profile. Part of this is what classes your school offers. So if you don’t have a computer science class (like my school) don’t worry too much about it! When you hear that they look at everything, they mean everything

In my opinion chemistry is more useful and applied more often.
 
If you can score 1450 on PSAT, you can score WAY HIGHER than 1460 on SAT (I scored 1470 PSAT and 1560 SAT). Besides that, organize your own fundraiser/charity, food drive, etc. You won't believe how easy it is to organize one, as long as you have purpose in everything you do. Good luck!
