I was born with a condition in my hand called symbrachydactyly, which basically means that my right hand is almost completely missing with the exception of a few little nubs and a tiny stump-like thumb. Is there any way I would be accepted into a military academy or am I wasting my time?

Mike -- thank you for your willingness and desire to serve

I am NOT a doctor. Here is the link to the document DoDMERB will use to determine whether you are "qualified" or "DQ":

https://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/DD/issuances/dodi/613003p.pdf?ver=2018-04-09-114201-123

Section 5.17 pages 29 & 30 seem relevant to your described condition. As you described your situation I believe DoDMERB would determine that you are DQ.

The next step would then be for the Admissions Office at the Service Academy to determine if your record was competitive enough to pursue a medical waiver on your behalf. If so, then it would be up to the Medical Waiver authority at the Service Academy to review your case and to decide whether a medical waiver can be granted.

I know there are some military members that have been wounded and received medical waivers in order to continue to serve on active duty; but, my knowledge is incomplete on whether waivers have ever been granted for entry to service. Others here on the Forum will perhaps know more.

If the military ends up not being a path, there are other ways to serve such as being a civilian in the military services

Best wishes to you
