Can someone provide insight on my situation?

Hello all!

I am currently in a "pickle" and was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into my situation.

I completed my eye exam in early December and found out later that I was DQed due to not having a distant visual acuity correctable to 20/20 in each eye. I thought to myself that this was odd and decided to get an additional test from a private optometrist.

According to the results from the optometrist, I was correctable to 20/20 in each eye with no other underlying conditions. I decided to send this information to DoDMERB, however, it seems like this information was never considered as the WA had requested AMIs. Having gone through all the required AMIs, which included another routine eye exam, the same outcome occurred, 20/20 in each eye with no underlying conditions.

This morning, I receive a notification that my status in DoDMERB had been updated. The new correspondences were: Distant visual acuity not correctable to 20/20 in each eye and Astigmatism in excess of 3.00 diopters. Has this ever happened to anyone? What are the chances of getting a waiver if my eyes aren't correctable to 20/20? What should I do going forward? I have received an LOA from USCGA and an NROTC Scholarship, and it seems to me these options are fading away. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

My son is in the same situation. Hasn’t heard anything. We did locate an opportunity of eye therapy for him beginning March 9. If offered he will accept, if rejected he will reapply. He wants it and is determined to overcome any obstacle in his path…irregardless of what anyone else believes.

I had same situation. Excessive astigmatism and R/O keratoconus. Got DQ'd last December.
Timeline; USAFA requested Waiver in Jan
Dodmerb update staus "under waiver review" Feb 2
Requested two AMI(Admin, medical) 2/8,
All eye exam results by optometrist and consultation note and certain graphic tests by Ophthalmologist submitted via email, 2/28
Received Waiver granted, 3/1.
you must follow their correspondence letter and if needed find your own Dr. ASAP not military facility or dodmet Dr.s.
Good luck to ypu!

It seems I’m in a very similar situation. I had consulted with a private optometrist regarding my vision, however, for the corneal topography it was much easier finding a provider through dodmets as exams can reach an upwards of $500. Ever since receiving the DQ I have been on top of this situation, it is very stressful.

They will request topography and consultation by Ophthalmologist MD not optometrist for sure if your astigmatism greater than 3. I found own Dr. and pay out of pocket because no one available within 100 mile and unable to schedule appointment in a month.

@Swimbr24, correct, I had to go to both an Optometrist and Ophthalmologist for my AMIs. However, after I sent in my AMIs they added an additional disqualification of astigmatism exceeding 3.00 diopters.

So you have correctable 20/20, why they said "Distant visual acuity not correctable to 20/20" ?
did you read the Dr.'s consultation note? it says 20/20? or 20/19 something/

I have no clue, despite getting tested 3 times with the outcome being correctable to 20/20. I have already emailed DoDMERB to see if I can gain any information. To my understanding, I think DoDMERB is going off the original exam where the DR said I was only correctable to 20/30.

What is number of astigmatism on topography? and no Keratoconus per Dr.s note?
I sent topography and no keratoconus confirmation by MD. it took almost month and it was pain to wait
Just do another AMI and send it ASAP and you will get it.
Good luck to you!

No Keratoconus per DR, however, I think astigmatism found on the topography was around -4.00 diopters. I'm not sure what you mean by doing another AMI. I don't think I will be able to book another appointment through dodmets, the other alternative would be to pay out of pocket which would be rather expensive and will most likely yield the same outcome.

Update: due to conflicting information presented in the initial DoDMERB exam and requested AMI, the technician decided to post both disqualifications. From this point forward, it is up to the waiver authorities to make a decision.

Good luck to those who are in the same boat!

Update: USCGA has denied me a waiver, for anyone wondering, I did have an LOA from USCGA back in September.
