Can we talk laundry?

Is a sewing kit something that is issued for plebes? Ironically, my son already knows how to sew buttons on so if not issued seems like a good thing to send.

Ever since COVID, the wife now has to wear scrubs to work. When she brings a new set home they're very wrinkled, so naturally I iron them using a heated ironing board w/ vacuum & press military creases into her tops finishing them off w/a tailors' clapper. Go big or go home!

> I'm pretty sure that it was issued...I am pretty certain that I have never gone out and bought one !

I might even still have my Mid issued sewing kit... I think it’s in my suitcase for when I travel.

Inquiring (and well dressed) minds want to know: What’s a tailor’s clapper and what does it do?
It's a wooden block about 6" long w/sharp edges along where they meet the base. After you iron the crease, you place the clapper over it & section by section press down firmly either along the crease or up & down several times ('clapping' it) making the crease sharper.

Also have a tailors' ham (for ironing rounded sections like shoulders, but haven't used it yet.)

My next iron I'm thinking. With a pointed edge at either end, ironing in both directions should make ironing even more fun than it normally is!:)

If that's even possible!!

Sponsor families I hear are a lifeline for laundry, another BC (before covid) program dismantled for a while. So for the whole plebe year no dry cleaning? or just the summer portion?

Has there been any official guidance related to sponsor program this year? IE, virtual one, delayed, canceled, etc?

I may be more impressed with the iron itself. Never knew one could pop itself up from the table...

Nothing on the website that I could find.

For the first time in over 2 decades, we are not taking in plebes, as a COVID safety measure, as DH and I have vulnerabilities. We are staying in touch with others in the sponsor mid family, but no overnights, no mids floating in the pool, doing laundry, relaxing on the deck while the grill is going non-stop. So weird after years of seeing almost every weekend. Sigh.

Yes they are issued, but I have never seen anybody use it. Mids already are required to pay for the tailor shop and they do a great job.

Super disappointed this has been suspended...

Yes, I cringed when she set it flat on the table and it raised itself. I thought I had just imagine it. Wow!

They're so fortunate to have a nice laundry service and I concur with the question, "When do Plebes get to wear civies?" Ironing creases is a natural, character-building exercise. And officers at sea have a similar cleaning service.

When I was enlisted and deployed to sea in the 80's there was no special service and our laundry was put into one big, mesh bag with a special metal pin with our name on it. It came back with more wrinkles than a fractal geometry algorithm written by a rat on crack. Tough experiences shared with shipmates builds the strongest character.

So rejoice Mids. You have it good. And yes.. Goooo Navy!

I don't know if things changed or something, but the bulk laundry service is exactly like shipboard wash formula. The only things you put in there are issued undershirts and blue rims/PT shorts. After while the PT shorts turn from dark blue to almost turquoise and the blue on the blue rims turns purple. And everything is a size smaller.

My shirts used to come back crumpled like a paper ball and almost as stiff.

Even the smallest ships now have at least one self-service washer/dryer, and it is worth waiting in line for.
