Hi,

I was wondering if you could take the CFA multiple times and if only the best CFA was used.

[edit] I am applying for West Point.

Thank you in advance

For USAFA, if you fail your first attempt, you are able to take it again. If you fail the second then you are no longer considered for an appointment.
Just don’t take it until you are certain that you won’t fail, and by this I mean hitting all the goals listed.

I took the CFA last week, and you are unable to take it again. My regional commander told me that over email. I'm assuming I passed because I haven't had anyone tell me any different and it has been a week. It is my understanding that if you fail, you can take it again.

I met with my DS's FFR. He said you cannot retake the CFA unless you fail.
That is what our son's regional advisor told him during last year's cycle. As a result, he trained until he exceeded goals or approached max.

Normally you can't retake the CFA, but the Regional Commander can approve an exception. Yes, admissions can see all attempts, but it doesn't matter. CFA scores are objective and only based on one test.

what I’m trying to figure out here, is whether or not I should attend the FFR sponsored CFA this Saturday, or wait until I am positive I can max out some events. I’m not too prepared for the CFA at the moment

If you think you might fail the test, consider doing it at a later date. If you fail and are an otherwise strong candidate, your RC may approve a retest, but it is not certain.

If you are sure you will pass and only want to delay to get a better score, you have to weigh the better score vs. the hassle of getting someone to administer the test.

I would also say that there is a difference between taking the CFA and submitting the CFA. You can ask your FFR if they are submitting the scores regardless of the outcome or if you can attend and see where you stand. Just my two cents.

My DS was able to retake the CFA. He did pretty well the first time and a bit better the second.
With fall sports up in the air for a lot of kids, injury risk is probably less. But that's one thing I would strongly consider in deciding whether to take it...my DS tore a ligament in his ankle on 9/12/19. If he hadn't taken the CFA before then, he would have been out of consideration.

My son took the CFA during a CVW at the Naval Academy in March. He didn’t do well as he was just coming off an injury. He will be at the NA summer seminar and also the West Point SLE … so in June he will be taking the CFA two more times. How does this work? Will all three scores be seen by both academies? Since they are summer camp scores, are they official? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure how the multiple tests will be looked at but USNA will not see the SLE score unless you ask for it to be sent to them and vice versa.

Here's what you can do, which is what I did:

1. Take the CFA and record it as normal.
2. Do not submit the recording.
3. Using your experience for the first one, train for a few more weeks.
4. Take it again.
5. Submit the better score.

Do this as many times as you want and only submit your best score.

USMA will get your SLE CFA score, and if you want to take it again, you'll have to ask the RC to open it back up manually. Some will, some won't.
