I was awarded the scholarship during the first board, yesterday I was given an appointment to the CGA and would like to cancel the ROTC. How do I do that?

It would help to know which ROTC branch you are inquiring about.

Congratulations on the CGA appointment!

So when someone declines an ROTC scholarship, do they offer next in line? Congrats on the CGA.

Yup contact ROO and CC and the money gets put back in the big pot for the next round of offers or gets divvied up for campus based offers at this point. It's not necessary for you to decline at this point (we'll figure it out this fall when you don't show up) but it's helpful. There are plenty of winners who going to academy's and are sitting on their ROTC offer as a backup. Those offers will be pulled when they show up at the academy. Thanks for thinking about turning yours back and letting us know.

Congrats on your appointment, but I am going to open the firestorm here. Think long and hard before you hand that back. It is honorable you want someone else to have that opportunity, but think about the what ifs first impo.

Many appointees hold onto the scholarship because the minute you take the oath on I Day is the minute the scholarship is revoked.

What if ... at your graduation party you play volleyball and break your wrist? I Day is 4 weeks a way and you will be in a cast for 6 weeks. What do you do now for the fall because you can't go to CGA next yrs due to being a medical turnback. What if ...you are on the baseball team and get injured. What if...you get mono the week before? What if you fall as you are getting off the bus on I Day and twist your knee?

Believe it or not all of those situations have happened on this forum. I am willing to bet not one of them thought they would be the what if appointee, but there they were. Now, if you don't need the money to go to your plan B school than I would hand the money back. However, if you do, well you might want to rethink contacting them.

+1 PIMA... AF Academy cadet at my sons high school broke his wrist doing some stupid senior prank. Had to sit out his first year . In addition he was a recruited football player. If the OP were my son I would say hold on to it but ONLY if he could see himself happy as an Army officer and not just a funding source.

Great advice! I have a similar question along those same lines. DD has appointment to USNA and I've told her to hold on to NROTC scholarship just in case. My question is does she proceed with accepting at the NROTC college as well? They're looking for a $400 deposit on May 1. Should I think of that as my insurance policy?

Yes and yes... otherwise what would be the point of hanging onto the NROTC scholarship if she hasn't reserved her slot at the college?

There have been many posters that contacted the plan B school. Paid the deposit, but explained their child has accepted the apptmt. Some colleges get it. Some posters were told they would refund the deposit.
