Candidate Number for Class of 2028

Does anyone know when we might expect Candidate numbers to be assigned for the Class of 2028. My DS is headed to NASS but hadn't seen anything from admissions since he put in his Precandidate questions.

I called yesterday afternoon and was told that admissions are ensuring that every application is properly put together before being sent to candidates, and that they should be releasing candidate numbers next week.

But I also called two weeks ago and received the same answer, so I am waiting here patiently until I receive an email-

Admissions are working on them. USNA had an IT issue end of last week causing minor hiccups. Patience is encouraged by admissions, so BGOs are spreading patience to candidates.

Yeah, Hadn't seen anything but was told by our BGO that it "should be this week." It is Thursday so I am not very hopeful it will happen this week..

Same here. My confusion comes from the site showing "Portal now open" but we have not received any notice yet. I called admissions and they said the end of the month we should get an email. We have plenty of time but he is so eager.

From reapplicant to first-time applicants + their families:

Waiting for portals, decisions, nominations, interviews, etc. opens the door for multitudes of nerves, reloading pages over and over, and a candidate chasing down the mailman on their afternoon runs to see if they have received a letter (They were incapable of waiting for it to be dropped in the mailbox 2 minutes later).

I completely understand the excitement just behind the portal opening, but patience will be asked of you throughout this process in what seems like infinite measures, and on other days you may receive a nomination three months before the congressional office said you would. The next nine months are going to involve waiting and uncertainty - it's part of the ride, and it allows very exciting phone calls to pop up at the most unexpected times.

PT, interview practice, spending time with friends, and building the integrity that you will flaunt in your essays (remember the teacher you side-eyed one too many times in 9th grade when she gave out giant homework packets? Go show your adultish side and send her an apology email and thank her for giving you the skills you have today) - these are worthwhile things that don't involve reloading the USNA website all afternoon, and I promise, not finishing your essay the day the portal opens won't cripple your application. :)

I would also add - as we start the new application cycle shortly, I HIGHLY recommend that communication to USNA Admissions and BGOs be from the candidate. This is a good opportunity to let your son/daughter take on some responsibility/ownership for THEIR own application. Parents should be offering support and advice, but let your son/daughter do the driving and communication.

Yes and yes!

In the past (pre-pandemic mayhem) applicants would receive an ECandidate Packet Letter (in an EMail) in May.

The ECandidate Packet Letter (contains your official candidate number and information as to how to login to the Candidate Information System, colloquially referred to on SAF as your "portal") typically comes out in the 2nd week of May. There has been nothing typical lately, however.

The class of 2024 received their ECandidate Packet Letters on May 6, 2019, and the class of 2025 received theirs on May 20, 2020. Everyone who applied for the class of 2025 was automatically declared an official candidate and given a number (unlike all other years before them). I wasn't really paying attention to what happened with '26 and '27.

One thing you can depend on as being absolute in the military is that you can depend on nothing happening when you expect it to happen, when you were told it was to happen, or to even happen the way it is supposed to happen.

Semper Gumby. ;)

Or, “The only constant in the military is change.”

Absolutely! 2026 candidate numbers came out in July.

Yes, it is so hard to wait and at times can seem very confusing. There are many moving parts and multiple military and government departments involved and timelines and processes will often change. But it is important that the candidate initiates all contact with admissions, MOCs, BGOs, DODMERB, contracted doctors, etc. Parents will need to assist with information on the online DODMETS medical history and maybe past medical records of your candidate is under 18, but everything else should be them.
