Candidate Visit Weekend

I received an invitation to CVW also, and I just accepted tonight! Seems like a great opportunity. I’m looking forward to this! We get to spend Thursday and Friday nights in Bancroft Hall and attend classes/activities with our assigned midshipman? That’s cool!

I am also prospective 2028.

Yup, can’t wait. Hope to see you there.

April 27th. You?

When my son accepted the CVW invitation (for March), the evite landing page printed a confirmation. However, the site also said that the event is sold out. It is not entirely clear to me that his attendance has been confirmed. Did you experience anything similar?

He is awaiting a response from USNA admissions, but I wanted to see if anyone had any insight.

It was the same process when my son went in October and everything went well. As long as you have the printed confirmation you should be fine! You will be emailed and texted closer to the date with more details as well.

As someone who attended both NASS and this past fall CVW I will share a little bit about my experiences for the CO 28ers.

NASS is, as others said, a recruiting program designed to focus on representation from all over the States. There were a lot of Puerto Ricans, Hawaiians, etc. Just because they want these really distant people to get to experience the academy. The NASS curriculum and modules seems like it is really geared towards resembling some parts of Plebe summer. You are lead by rising 3/C cadets in a squad similar to Plebe Summer. You get some experiences from them that resemble Plebe Summer (without disclosing too much as to ruin some of the novelty of being along for the ride and not knowing whats next, also like PS). There were people I know who after NASS were no longer interested in USNA. Obviously, it is better they found out because if they couldn't do 5 days they were probably not a good match. But NASS has that energy. It's a good taste of the exhaustion, and occasionally, harassment that PS can offer. Just on a pint sized scale, all while giving the rising 3/C an opportunity to practice leadership. While there is an admissions process to get in, and I would say it is a good first step to be accepted, admissions consistently stressed that NASS was not a representation of future admissions for said class.

A CVW, on the contrary, is said reliably by admissions to be a good indicator of a promising file. Heck, Adm. Buck will tell you himself at a CVW that you are there for a reason because you are promising. A CVW is a very cut and dry exposure to the Ac year, as opposed to NASS might be to PS. You get a realistic experience of going to real classes with real MIDS and getting some exposure to yard activities on the daily basis. I was able to attend a sports practice during my CVW. This is a real view of USNA, not sugar coated, complete with early mornings with tired plebes. If you have drunk the cool-aid as I have, you will love it.

As others said, NASS is perhaps more a time for you to consider USNA and for USNA to evaluate you (in part by seeing if you continue to be interested), where as the CVW will likely play a large part in YOUR decision-making if you are appointed. I think mine will be instrumental in me giving Army WP a big GO NAVY!

A funny story about my CVW, back in September 2022:
After the initial presentation on the first night, I found my company along with every other candidate. The only issue was that I, a male, was assigned to a female Plebe! The error happened because an upperclassman in my host company thought I was female because my first name is Quinn, and so he assigned me to a female Plebe. Of course, I was reassigned to a male Plebe who volunteered, and he was a great host.
Unfortunately, the female Plebe was really excited to have a girl shadow her as this was the first CVW of the year, and she had prepared a bag of snacks for her "drag". I still got the snacks, which I was grateful for.
Before I realized that "drag" was a term used by Plebes for their CVW shadows, I thought they making a pun on the whole situation. But no, candidates are just a "drag" on their day, hence the term!
Regardless, it was a great weekend all in all. I hope you have a great CVW as well.

Curious mind here-
I'm a 2027 candidate and received a CVW invite a week or two ago. I haven't been notified of an appointment or LOA as of now(all boxes checked since Nov with dodmerb exception). Is the invite a good sign or nothing to read into?
I was curious why a 2027 candidate would be offered one this late in the admissions cycle.

I don’t know the behind the scenes, but my son was offered a CVW in Jan, attended in Feb, and his appt came in April. Enjoy your visit! He loved his time at CVW and the firsthand plebe experience.

By chance was your CVW invite unsolicited? Many applicants haven't been notified of an appointment yet and the majority do not receive LOAs. It's only January, hardly "late in the admissions cycle." Let yourself dream a little and take it as a good sign. But keep an even keel. Who knows, maybe the end result will be like @USMCfam. Good luck.

My DS was offered a CVW as well (which he signed up for) and he was also contacted about the Inspire program. We are hoping that he is able to attend for Inspire as well. He is over the moon (he has wanted this since he was 12). Although there is definitely a long road ahead, it sure helps with the motivation and nerves.

I inquired about a CVW in September and was told that if I was offered one I'd be notified in the following two weeks (I didn't receive any further communication about a CVW until now).
I'm trying not to impatiently grasp at straws, however, I was curious. I'm still trying to get a grasp on the admissions processes and didn't know if there was any correlation between the invite and my application. :)

DS attended summer STEM after being declined for it once.
Applied for summer seminar. Declined. He of course equated that to no shot at admission which was completely WRONG (I did enjoy reminding him of that years later).
He received an appointment mid January.
He did receive an unsolicited CVW but having attended summer STEM we chose not to spend the money to attend (cross country travel).

Summer STEM and Seminar are outreach programs. They are also trying to spread the offers over many geographic and demographic areas.
Don’t over think this part.

Attend if you have interest.

Apply if you want and do the work.

A note on my CVW: I went to an in-person admissions brief over the summer to demonstrate my interest and learn more, and since I was one of only two candidates at the brief, I got to speak a lot to the admissions officer after. She offered me the CVW in person, and I got the email standing in the admissions office. As I said, I attended in September.

A good sign for sure.
https://www.usna.edu/CVW/index.php From the Q&A section "Based on your application thus far or previous information we already had, we determined that you could be a good fit for USNA."

Anyone here doing the CVW on 3/2-3/4? My DS is doing that weekend and we're contemplating making a little weekend out of it ourselves while he's doing that. Is it true the tour they give parents on the Friday is a little better than the standard tour they give out of the visitor's center, i.e. get to see more things?

I went last year at that same weekend time and my parents and siblings made it a weekend thing too. They had a great time and said the tour was really great. Better than the standard one everyone else gets normally. Good luck to your DS and enjoy the time!

DS went to the March CVW last year as well and I did the parent portion. I would say the extras you get as part of this tour vs. a regular tour include the parent Q and A, and you get to go inside and see King Hall, and maybe more of Bancroft? I also remember wishing I wore a heavier coat because it is also a lot of time outside.
