I spoke on the phone with a CAP Squadron Recruiting Officer (something along those lines) who also works on the nomination board for my district. He said he would encourage me to join CAP since their academics are more geared toward service academies compared to JROTC.

Is that true? What do you guys think?
I’m debating on whether to do CAP, Army JROTC, or even both. I’m also a sophomore if that gives any more valuable information.
(Out of the five, I’m most interested in the Naval Academy)

Huh ? I will admit, I'm over 40 years removed from CAP , but never heard of a "Recruiting" officer, or Academics. Our "academics" was largely self study, ie. read the book and take a test for advancement.

To be honest, none of these programs are "necessary" for Admission to a Service Academy. They might give a slight boost if you do well, advance, have leadership positions, etc. but my experience with Boy Scouts was more meaningful . (I am an Eagle Scout, and advanced to C/Major or C/LCOL and was Wing Cadet of Year before I left for NAPS). There was also some initial benefit because I new how to wear a uniform, basic military customs and courtesy etc. before I reported to NAPs and subsequent IDay.

Bottom line, don't select a program because you think it prepares you best for a Service Academy.. If you like the program and want to participate, by all means, do it , but not because you think it will get you in !

JROTC can be a nominating source to a service academy. If the Army JROTC unit is an honor unit the lead instructor can nominate to the Naval Academy as well as West Point.
