Car insurance?

My very soon to be C2C purchased "his own" policy from USAA just last weekend so that he can take his car back to the Academy later this summer. It was very easy to do - they were extremely helpful in walking him through the process, his options etc (and letting me be on the other phone extension to make sure he got the right coverage etc). It was also very reasonably priced given he is 20 year old male who unfortunately does not have a perfect driving record. And, yes, he can still drive any of the family cars with our permission, even thought he is not listed anywhere on our policy.

Spoke with usaa this morning and they recommended that I keep ds on our policy as a student attending school without vehicle.
She did not recommend the "non-owner" policy.

So, should we just take him off completely when he goes to school(and he will be covered when he comes home for Christmas because we give him permission to drive the car)
or
should we continue to carry him on our policy as the nice lady said.

I find that very odd that a USAA rep would not recommend the non-owner policy, since the literature that USAA distributes to the cadets every year makes it a point of advertising it. However, I know that things change at the Academy, and my info is already a couple of years old. Thanks to everyone for your posts about your experiences.

Rental cars for cadets under 21

Yes - cadets under 21 can rent cars at regular rates but they have to go through the Colorado R&R (1-877-517-3381) at the Academy. The rental car companies they use actually bring the cars to the AFA on Friday afternoons and then the cadets return them to a lot at the AFA and leave the keys in a drop box at Arnold Hall. It they need a car another time, then they have to catch a ride or shuttle to the rental car companies that the Colorado R&R uses that are not far from the South Gate. These are the only locations that the cadets under 21 can rent from (note the airport is not one of the locations they can rent from).

They have to show proof of insurance or buy the insurance which runs about $30/day.

In reference to the USAA non-owner policy - I got the same recommendation not to buy because it is only liability coverage to something you hit, not the car you are driving. That would be the same insurance that the owner of the borrowed car SHOULD already have by state law on the borrowed car that would cover any driver that has permission to drive the owner's car.

This is true of Colorado R&R. But if they are a USAA member, they can rent from Hertz and the underage fee is waived down to the age of 18. This can be from Hertz anywhere.

From USAA website: Waived for 18- to 24-year-olds.
Typically $25 per day.

If you are a USAA member, you can go here to see the rental car benefits.
