Hello everybody. I'm a male junior in high school who is rather familiar with the AFROTC scholarship application process. I was wondering if anybody familiar with the tendencies of the boards in awarding scholarships by type would be willing to give me a general idea of the likelihood of receiving a scholarship offer, and for which particular level (Type 2, Type 7, etc). Thank you very much, and if you need additional info, let me know.
College Plans: Purdue or UW-Madison for mechanical engineering with a minor in business, I plan on specializing in computational fluid dynamics so I can work as an aerospace engineer in the Air Force. I don't have a particular interest in flying, and would rather work in a technical field, but I keep my options open.
GPA: 3.81 (GPA in AP courses is 3.95, I have an upward trend for grades)
ACT: 35 (35 English, 33 Math, 36 Reading, 35 Science)
Course load: By the end of junior year, 6 AP's and 6 Honors, by the end of senior year, 11 AP's.
AP's are World History (5), French Language (5), Calc AB, Chemistry, US History, and English Lang. + Composition. Senior year will add Calc BC, Physics A, Statistics, English Literature + Composition, and Govt. + Politics.
Ranking: 11.22% in class of 303
Extra-curriculars:
Memorial Day Ceremony Speaker (surprised to be offered this as a junior, gave speech on importance of honoring veterans and active duty service members in front of a couple thousand)
National Honor Society Vice President
Mock Trial State Semifinalist
Mock Trial Best Witness in State
State Economics Challenge 2nd Place
Church Pilgrimage youth leader (plan logistics and specifics of week long trip halfway across the country, then lead the trip in small groups. Advocate for the trip across the diocese with speeches)
City Youth Education Initiative (group of high school students who work with the local business leaders like the Chamber of Commerce, and education leaders like the superintendent, in order to prepare students for secondary education. Organize and lead ACT prep classes)
Math Team
Student Council
Quiz Bowl Varsity
Building and Grounds Committee at Church (volunteer and coordinate projects)
YMCA Youth Soccer Coach
Freshman Transition Leader (assist frosh orientation and give seminars on how to adjust to high school)
After-school Foreign Language Teacher at local elementary school
Sports:
JV Soccer (Frosh/Soph)
Varsity Soccer (Junior/Senior)
Church League basketball
Indoor Soccer
Summer Rec Soccer
Work Experience:
Appliance tech at a small business, operate in commercial and residential settings, work with Quickbooks for accounting, give presentations at trade shows and FD open houses, and do marketing.
Summer internship at a tech firm that specialized in RFID chips and recovery processes.
PFT Chances: Fairly confident I will max out the run but come short of maxing out push ups and sit ups. Assume a less than desirable outcome in this factor just to be conservative.
Interview Chances: I feel very comfortable in interview settings, and really look forward to it. My family has an extensive legacy in the military, and the Air Force in particular.

Again, thank you very much for your time and effort in helping me out, I appreciate it a great deal.

The AFROTC scholarship is generally weighted more towards the academic side of things. Obviously none of use here are selecting recipients, but I wouldn't be surprised if you got a Type 1. Make sure you get your application done early enough to meet the first board. Are you near either of your schools - would you interview there?

Thanks for your reply! I will be entering my application as soon as the window opens and I can complete the PFT. The closest detachment to my location for the purposes of interviewing is Det. 925 at UW-Madison.

Ok. It's great to interview at a Det you may attend. You may also receive a "Commander's Scholarship" offer from schools you are interested in. I received an offer, but was asked to commit to that school, so I declined to wait for USAFA. You will probably be weighed and height measured at your interview too - just a heads-up. Best wishes

I have not heard about the Commander's Scholarship before, so thank you for letting me know! As for the height and weight, I'm within guidelines by a good amount. Thanks again.

I have a similar profile - 35 ACT, 4.0 GPA etc - and am currently at a top 10 university. I'm on a Commander's Scholarship, so you look like a strong applicant.

If you know push ups and sit ups will fall short on your oft, start doing them. Every day
Thanks! I have been practicing those in particular, even running through the entire process (run, push ups, sit ups), my issue is currently having the speed to complete them within a minute rather than my capacity to do a certain quantity. Part of my daily routine is push ups and sit ups when I wake up, get home, do homework, and get to bed, so I should probably add more dedicated time for that. Do you have advice for improving the speed of those two exercises?

Thank you. In regards to the Commander's Scholarship, are you entered into consideration for that at every school you have listed as being interested in attending, or just the one you interview at? And in that case, would it make sense to interview at a detachment within a school for which you would have a greater financial need?

Sit-ups: make sure you are using efficient form. I believe your elbows had to touch mid-thigh, so don't waste energy overshooting. Also, short forceful exhalation right as I come up helps me crank them out. I suggest doing planks for a few minutes to build endurance too.

For the Commander's Scholarship, I interviewed at a local Det (my top choices were quite far away). The interviewer contacted my top choice Det with my info, and the Commander there called me and offered it.

Planks rock, man. Thanks so much for the info about the PFT and Commander's Scholarship. Where does the percentage offered for the Commander's Scholarship lie in comparison to Type 1, 2, and 7's offered?

I think this year most people who got Type 1 had at least 3.85 or greater.

All looks great. You should receive an offer but the Type will depend on the pool of candidates in part so definitely be sure you complete it for the first board. My son was offered Commanders leadership scholarship at his state flagship where he interviewed. Apparently each detachment can offer one of those to their top choice but you have only 2-3 days to accept it. My son declined since he applied early action to an Ivy League school and that was his top choice besides USMA. Good luck! Try to finish out this last semester as strong as possible since they only count your GPA through end of -1th grade.

Do you believe that course load and GPA in AP classes in particular will help offset that disparity, or is that unlikely?

Congratulations to your son! This semester is progressing very well at the moment. Does the Commander's Scholarship pose any benefits over a Type 7 (or Type 2 etc) scholarship for an in-state school? My impression is that both would cover in-state tuition in one way or another.

I just joined this semester -- I was offered ICSP Type-1 Commander's Scholarship as soon as my DODMERB came back positive, signed Form 16, and the semester's worth of tuition & fees were deposited through my school's Bursar's office within a week.

It was very hassle-free, low-stress, and unexpectedly easy especially because there were almost no work done on my part. The cadre & the school FA office took care of the details of the scholarship.

That's awesome. Do you have any advice for the interview? I know it's a personal instance, but seeing as your application process went exceptionally well. I'm curious what is desired for that process. I'm aware of the basics of the interview, but what seemed most effective for you?

I never had any "official" interview. Spent few weeks in the program this semester - as I assume - the cadre looking at my performance, the fit for the program etc.

I've maxed the sit ups and pushups for APFT, not sure if it's the same. For pushups, what will help most is doing full range of motion. Go all the way down and touch your chest to the ground. Also, work on different types of pushups to specifically strengthen your triceps and chest, diamond pushups for tris and wide for chest. Aim to do 200 or so pushups throughout every day. As for sit ups, just do them. A lot. Probably 5 sets of 100 or 10 sets of 50 throughout the course of a day will help.

Thanks! I've been doing modifiers slightly along those lines, but I will definitely take your advice. I think the only difference between the APFT and the AFPFT is 1.5 mi run vs 2.0 mi run. Congrats on maxing it out!

I apologize for resurrecting this post, but I felt this update would be helpful. My current PFA practice (using the exact directions off of the official AFROTC scholarship app sheet, doing each exercise in succession) scores are as follows:
1.5 mile run: 9:05
Waist Circumference: 29 Inches (self measurement, but regardless, well "over" what I assumed is the max score)
Push Ups/Min: 41
Sit Ups/Min: 52
The reason I bring this up is because I have not yet found what is a good/great PFA score to be very competitive in the scholarship application process, that is until I found this document: www.afpc.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-110804-054.pdf
According to my preliminary results, I had a 95.8 Composite Score (falling into the "Excellent" category). Can anybody comment on whether or not the information in the document on what is deemed "Excellent", "Satisfactory", and "Unsatisfactory" is correct as it applies to the scholarship application process? However, unlike my composite score, my push up score fell into the "Satisfactory" category, rather than "Excellent" like all the other components. Is that a significant issue? Regardless, I will continue to work towards improving my scores. Thanks in advance for everybody's help in coping with my excessive amount of questions.
