Hi Everyone,
I'm currently in my Sophomore year of high school, and I'm interested in majoring in Computer Science if I get accepted into the Naval Academy within the upcoming years. What careers are available to a USNA Computer Science Major?

.
Does the Naval Academy have a “Computer Science” major.

I think it might be more of a “Math” major with intense “Data Science” exposure, because Data Scientist is the big thing today

Other experts please chime in on the:

1. The 4year major and minor?

2. Service-Major related post-graduation opportunities?
.

They do.

My DD (c/o 2019) graduated with a double major in Computer Science and Information Technology.
Computer Science was heavy on theory, and the Information Technology was a more "practical" path. They overlapped a good deal with electives, so it wasn't easy, but was doable for the double major.

She is currently an NFO stationed in Norfolk.

Cyber Warfare Engineer. The most similar to software engineering, including software development-related project/program management.

Information Professional. Computer networking and information technology management. Space and satellite communications. Defensive cyberspace operations and cybersecurity.

Cryptologic Warfare. Signals analysis, cryptography, offensive cyberspace operations.

USMC has similar options, e.g. cyberspace officer or communications officer.

This is assuming you meant officer career directly related to computer science as a field of study. CS does not constrain your service assignment choices and you can commission in almost any community, with a few exceptions (METOC, CEC, Med Corps).

There is no computer science minor. Only language minors are available. If I remember correctly, a CS/IT dual major is only a difference of 3-4 classes, and is the easiest of all dual major options to achieve without validation. CS/EE, CS/CY, and CS/CE are also possible depending on factors like validation and plebe year academic performance.

I saw someone do Aero/CS, so nothing is really off the table if you have some prior experience and can validate more than a few classes.

Career in the Navy or outside? I assume you mean in the Navy.

Computer science, coding, data analytics — those are my specialties and what I’ll be teaching at USNA.

Others mentioned CWE but please know quotas are limited, per the USNA site and my own knowledge from previous jobs.

IP Officer — sure, but also limited.

Of course being a CS major opens many doors for you due to the skill set. Lastly, I’ll point you to this post I recently made regarding CS skills:

(Apologies for any typos, doing this one handed on phone holding a baby!)
