Hello all,

Just a little background info,
I am in the ARNG and I’m currently a senior in high school. I leave for basic in late June of 2020 to Fort Sill and then I’ll be going to Fort Sam Houston for 68W AIT. I will go to a community college and I hope to transfer to a UC by junior year.

I understand that there are 2,3,4-year scholarships for ROTC, but I wanted to know how a transfer could apply for the 2-year scholarship. Is it even possible for a transfer to get the 2-yr scholarship or is it pretty much impossible? Also I researched on the web about DEDNG and SMP, but I’m not totally clear on how it works because the web gives limited information. Is it possible for me to do both of these?

Thank you to anyone who can be of help. I just wanted to know more information on how I can go through ROTC as a transfer student and scholarships I can apply for to lower the overall college cost(including tuition, room and board, books, etc.).

There are two year scholarships available for Army ROTC. The Battalion at the school would be in charge of those.

Contact the ROO at the four year college. A lot will depend on if you are seeking to remain NG/reserves or to go active duty. If you plan to remain in the NG, there is a GRFD (Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty) scholarship that may be more accessible for you. If you accept this scholarship it virtually eliminates AD for you though, so keep that in mind.

Thank you for your input. I would prefer to remain NG in the Army, as I don’t see myself going AD. I would contact the ROO at the UC I want to go to, but I fear that the ROO wont care or try to help me out since it’ll be 3 years until I might get into the school.

I have yet to meet a ROO who isn't genuinely helpful so long as he is not bogged down. When you say UC, do you mean University of California? (I live in Northern California. DS #1 and DD #2 are both UCLA alums, and DD #2 is a UCSB alum. My DS #2, who is now a 2LT is a Nevada alum)

Yes I mean University of California. That’s so cool that they went to UCLA. Attending UCLA as an incoming freshman is extremely competitive and since my highschool gpa and sat arent strong, I wanted to transfer to UCLA from a CC. I’m from the SoCal area and I wanted to attend a university that was close to home. The only worry I have now is whether I can get into UCLA as a transfer and whether I can do ROTC.

My DD (non-military) started at UC Irvine in theater. She discovered Linquistics and Irvine did not have a Linguistics major. She was allowed to transfer from UCI to UCLA which is unusual. She is proof that it can happen. UCLA is a tough school to x-fer to because of the sheer volume of applications that they receive. All the UC's are great schools though.

Here is the Army ROTC contact info for UCLA.

The UCLA ROO is Mr. Romeo Miguel
His email is: rbmiguel@milsci.ucla.edu
