Cell phone at Kings Point

Yes you can have them yes they can be smartphones...BUT you will not have access them. During Indoc you will probably be able to call on Sundays for about 5-10 mins., you will write letters home to communicate how you are doing and how things are going and hopefully you can receive letters as well. During plebe year, you will probably have your cell phone only on Sat or Sun and during the rest of the week they will be secured. If you go on a TM (team/club movement) you will have your phone.

:)yes- plebes definitely need a cell phone but they do not have to be a smart phone. Our DS had a I Phone and was grateful to have it. (honestly I think most students have smart phones)
 
FYI - reception can be iffy on campus and they often have to go outside the barracks to get a good signal. Sometimes it depends on what side of the hall IN the barracks! We have AT&T but I think it's the same for all carriers... Still, it's very good to hear their voice on Sundays.
 
We communicate mostly via FB messenger and Skype. The reception in the barracks is horrible. Plebes have to stand out in the middle of the square to use their phones.
 
Lol this is gonna be a struggle, but I think I will survive. It's gonna be pretty hard to cut back and not be so dependent on my smart phone
 
As an old timer, I see threads like this and have a bit of a chuckle. One of the things that I liked about being at sea when I sailed was the disconnection. No better way to prepare for it than restricting cell/smart phone access. Now, connectivity is a bit better at sea, but still hit and miss. Of course when I sailed, ships were equipped with radio telegraph stations and the tugs I sailed on had sideband radio. Often times it is better to be disconnected with shoreside life to better concentrate on the task at hand.
