Just wondering if it's typical to receive a Congressional Recognition Award as well as the nomination letter from a Senator.

Not that I know of. The Nom is what is required to get appointed. Nice award, but it's non-competitive so not sure how much stock is put into for admissions if that is what you are curious about. I would say the actions that qualify you for the award are what are important.

Every MOC seems to handle the recognition of a nomination to an SA differently.

Two years ago, DS2 received a personal phone call from the MOC, getting called out of class, and his name in the local newspaper. However no certificate or letter.

Whereas, DS1 (many years ago) received a very nice congressional certificate and a letter, plus an evening reception for the nominees, but no public announcements.

Your mileage may vary!

I had to call and email my congressman several times about my nomination and my portal was just updated today! I doubt I will receive a letter. I will take a pic of my portal and frame it.
@Trackgirl1999 you're funny :D. Keep them coming. I will have to start following your posts.

My mother in law has these matted professionally framed of my husbands senate and congressional nomination certificates and letters hanging in her house. I have a screenshot of my sons email from the congressional staffer.

(Husband didn't even end up going to USAFA. He injured his shoulder playing high school soccer and it required surgery. He lost appointment and never reapplied. There's a good end to the story... He ended up at a college and met a girl. They've been married for almost 19 years and their son is applying to the academies.)

I was assuming the OP was asking about a specific award called the Congressional Recognition Award or something along those lines. If it is... my first post stands. If OP is referencing some type of certificate with their Nom, some MOCs do a presentation and others don't.

My DD's nom came in a blue padded folder with the congressional seal embossed on the outside and inside was the nom letter on the left and a pretty certificate on the right.... very fancy. I thought it was a classy touch. Getting nominated is really hard to accomplish... we know kids who didn't even get an interview.

It said "Certificate of special congressional recognition ".

OR, you can be a complete dufus like myself.....kiddo gets his beautiful WP appointment folder back in the day and proud pappa goes out and has the whole thing custom framed as though he's going to be the second coming of Robert E. Lee. Two months later he decides to go to USNA instead and I've got a piece of artwork worthy of the Smithsonian that's now the subject of of lot of good laughs here at the home bar.

Stop by anytime and you can laugh at the old man like everyone else....but the drinks will be first class.
