nge2457, I run in the street (on the shoulder, of course!) rather than the sidewalk because asphalt is a little easier on the joints than pavement is. Just make sure to look out for cars, and only run on quiet neighborhood roads!
It also helps to have great running shoes. Saucony has some pretty good ones that don't break the bank. I always wear insoles in mine for extra padding.
Finally, if your knees bother you, you can wear knee straps like the ones made by Ace. I used to get OSD when I was playing tennis 12-15 hours a week, and these straps pretty much solved the problem for me. Of course, if you truly are injured, don't try to train through it. It will not work out well.
