My daughter submitted her CFA on 10/30 and I knew from the get-go that her run time was going to hurt her - 9.16 - and sure enough, this morning she received a request for a redo. I couldn't figure out why her time seemed so slow as she keeps a fairly good pace when she is doing her practice runs, but after speaking with her tonight, she told me that her gym teacher had her run the perimeter of the soccer field. Her school doesn't have a track and it was deemed to be unsafe to map out a mile through the school parking lots and driveways.

My question is, how much, if at all, do you think the grass run affected her time?

I know she's discouraged right now (as am I) and I'm trying to keep things positive. I'm going to reach out to her gym teacher tomorrow to see if we can come up with a better plan for her retake. Other than the run, her other scores were average to above average, with a max on pushups. I hate to see her DQ'd because of a crappy run situation!

Grass doesn’t help. DD’s school didn’t have a track either. So she met the proctor at another school that did have a track. She didn’t like those scores, though, so decided to try again.

Next time, she did it at her school, on a course that was mapped out and used regularly by the cross country team. Was on combo of pavement and packed dirt, but with some undulations. Her time on that was better, but could’ve been due to more practice rather than surface.

Interestingly, where surface really mattered was the shuttle run. Gym floor had been resurfaced a couple days earlier. So no sliding when making the turn. Time was so good that USMA called proctor and asked him to verbally confirm the time. He did. All turned out well.
