So, I got a letter in my portal today, the first paragraph says:

"We recently received your Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) and your performance does not indicate that you will successfully complete physical training at the United States Military Academy. However, based upon the strength of your overall record, I am authorizing you to take the CFA again. In order to restart the process, go to the Candidate Portal and send your CFA contact a new email. You should prepare diligently, retake the entire CFA, capture video of your pull-up and pushup events, and have your results along with the video clips submitted by January 31, 2020."

Is this a good thing? I knew that my CFA was very weak, but if they're asking me to retake it does it mean I'm competitive for admission or I just failed?

Start working out. And do well.

Your strength of overall record is good. It’s clear what they wrote ... not sure the confusion.

Wow they require video of the pullups and pushups too? pretty hardcore.

Are you a Marine? (username Jarhead)

Would think that meeting the physical requirements would be a piece of cake for anyone who made it through USMC boot camp.

Of course it’s a good thing. You’re being given a second chance. It doesn’t matter if you failed or just fell short — there’s nothing you can do about that except retake the CFA. Consider the alternative: Your results could have been poor and you didn’t get a second chance.

Why are you angry Sargrio?

My question, and supposition, was reasonable to ask of someone identifying themselves as a "Jarhead". If you aren't aware, that is what Marines are referred to as.

As an FMF member I have taken the USMC PFT several times. and it is tougher than the PT tests given in the other services (at least it was during my time of service spanning mid 80's to early 2000's, with a break for college).

IIRC, the test was 2-minutes each PUSHUPS, PULLUPS to max (nobody can do pullups for 2 minutes), SITUPS, and a THREE MILE RUN.

Max time for the run for a young man was under 18 minutes.

This was the same pace as maxing the 2-mile run in the Army, which was under 11:54, which I was able to do as a young Sergeant, but there was no way in hell I could maintain that pace for a 3rd mile.

Sure, I would think positive since they've thought enough to reach out and offer you another opportunity. However, there must be a significant concern on their part as to whether you are up to the physical requirements? Get after it quickly and good luck!

So you are not a Marine? (there are no prior Marines)

Pretty simple question.

One can be a Marine veteran and be a candidate for a SA or ROTC scholarship.

Is there another meaning to your username?

Wasn’t Jarhead also a comic strip some time ago (I believe the avatar pic confirms)...

And to answer your OP, I can’t see how else you would interpret their note to you other than they think your overall record makes you competitive but they are concerned with the physicality

Based on some years of observation, I think many screen names here are aspirational in nature, whether it’s a variant of “Navypilot” or whatever. We have had versions of “jarhead dad,” and it’s not a dad who happens to be a Marine, it’s the dad of a wannabe Marine son or daughter. I just go with the flow; if germane to the issue under discussion, the actual context usually emerges.

What were your scores if I may ask?

I considered this. And had his sig line included USNA candidate, I would have considered that he aspired to be a USMC officer by way of Annapolis.

I doubt I was alone in thinking that a member named "Jarhead713" would be a Marine, either currently serving, or a young veteran.

The lack of clarification, and non-forthcoming reply when asked a direct question about being a Marine is IMO poor form, and can make the use of a common Marine identifier come across as a mild form of stolen valor. Try, as a non-Marine, to go to the Marine hangouts outside 29 Palms or Pendleton, and identify yourself as "Jarhead", and see how that works out....

No, I recall Jughead from Archie as well. I am familiar with the name as referring to Marines but I also seem to recall from early childhood a military themed comic strip called Jarhead. I’m old though, so maybe I’m just dreaming it.
