I am applying for the 2026 class at USAFA and my CFA is approaching soon and I wanted to see how well my CFA scores held up. So far I can max out the sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups, but my basket ball throw is generally underperforming (50ft give or take on average). I wanted to know if my excelling numbers in other areas will make up for this, or if this underperformance is going to fail me.

B Ball throw is so tough for some people and is all about technique. DS and I spent most of our prep working to improve the B Ball throw and there was some improvement. The mean is 69 and he ended with less than this. He did max out on the other categories, had a decent shuttle run and excellent mile run. Sounds like you should be fine. Wouldn't hurt to spend some time trying to improve the BBall throw. Here is a video of some tips and pointers....Good Luck!!

Yes, this was the event that we had to practice the most! It did get a lot better the more we practiced and learned how to create the most force without falling forward. Good Luck!

Yes, practice your basketball throw! Since you’re maxing out other events, you definitely have the ability to do well on it; you just need to find the technique that works for you. When I started I was throwing the basketball around 50 feet, but after watching some technique videos and spending a lot of time practicing (I’d say collectively almost an hour a day) I got much more comfortable with the event. When it came time for my official CFA throw, I ended with a throw of 97 feet, my personal best! You’ve got this, it’ll just take some practice and attention to detail. Personally, I think that the basketball throw by nature is meant to show preparation rather than physical strength. The basketball throw is a weird event, and you can only do well if you practice, no matter how strong you are! I feel like a good score on the throw proves to the academy that you took the time to practice the events. Good luck!

I retrieved many a ball our son threw practicing this event. I felt like a golden retriever. Great memories. No less then 10 throws a night.

When I was helping my ds practice for the bb throw, I would often complain that I was the one working out! Our throwing area in the backyard has one side that slopes down so I had to chase that ball pretty far all while trying to see how far he threw it. Training my dogs to get the ball was not successful. DS improved a lot but he never figured out how to thow more than 65 feet. That was a huge improvement over where he started and the videos helped a lot. However, I've wondered if his distance is related to his weight. He is a tall skinny one so has no weight to throw behind the ball. Thankfully, he's great at situps, pullups, and running to offset the lackluster throw.
